We’re looking forward to introducing you to Antonisha Hicks. Check out our conversation below.
Good morning Antonisha, it’s such a great way to kick off the day – I think our readers will love hearing your stories, experiences and about how you think about life and work. Let’s jump right in? What is something outside of work that is bringing you joy lately?
Honestly, what’s been bringing me the most joy lately is being able to spend more time with my family — my husband, my two daughters, and my son. I’ve really been enjoying those one-on-one moments: playing dolls with my girls, watching my son jump around pretending to be Spidey (he’s obsessed with Mickey Mouse and Spidey right now 😅), and getting quality time with my husband — even finally going on dates again. Those little everyday moments have been the best part of life outside of work.
Can you briefly introduce yourself and share what makes you or your brand unique?
My name is Antonisha Hicks. I’m a wife, a mom, and someone who has always been creative at heart. Even as a little girl, I was making dollhouses out of cardboard boxes, finding joy in creating something beautiful from nothing. That creativity followed me into motherhood — as a teen mom, I was looking for an extra stream of income and started making party favors for my daughter’s first birthday.
Each child inspired me to grow a little more. After my second, I introduced soft playgrounds, and after my third, I added mascots. Piece by piece, what began as small creative projects turned into something much bigger — my event planning and design company, Extraordinaire Affairs LLC.
For me, creativity has always been more than a skill — it’s been a way to provide for my family, build a legacy, and transform ordinary moments into extraordinary experiences. Beyond being a business owner, I’m someone who values family, resilience, and making every detail count.
Okay, so here’s a deep one: What did you believe about yourself as a child that you no longer believe?
As a child, I was often told I was mean or angry, but in reality, I think I was just misunderstood. I longed for things I didn’t fully understand at the time and needed things I wasn’t receiving. That emptiness showed up as attitude to others. Now, with my family and my business, I finally have what I always needed — love, purpose, and fulfillment. Both have made me softer, calmer, happier, and more at peace.
I wasn’t the loudest child — I was very shy and didn’t talk much, but I found ways to express myself through creativity, singing, and dancing. Those became my safe spaces, the ways I let my true self shine. Looking back, I realize that creativity has always been my voice, and today it’s the same creativity that fuels my work and gives me confidence in who I am.
If you could say one kind thing to your younger self, what would it be?
If I could say one kind thing to my younger self, it would be: You’re not mean, you’re not too much, and you’re not hard to love — you’re just misunderstood right now. One day, you’ll find your purpose, your people, and your peace. Keep holding on, because the very things that make you feel different now are the gifts that will set you apart later.
Alright, so if you are open to it, let’s explore some philosophical questions that touch on your values and worldview. What are the biggest lies your industry tells itself?
One of the biggest lies in the event planning industry is that cheaper is better. A lot of people are told to compete by lowering their prices, but in reality, the clients who value you will pay for your worth — and the ones chasing discounts are usually the hardest to please.
Another lie is that we can’t help or support each other. When I first started, I asked people for advice on pricing, vendors, and where to begin, and the answer was basically, ‘you’ll figure it out.’ There’s also this belief that if you share someone else’s post or show support, your clients will run to them instead. That mindset creates unnecessary jealousy and competition when really, there’s enough room for everyone to win.
The truth is, supporting each other doesn’t take away from your success — it actually builds a stronger industry and community. Collaboration, encouragement, and generosity will always go further than gatekeeping and negativity.
Okay, so let’s keep going with one more question that means a lot to us: Have you ever gotten what you wanted, and found it did not satisfy you?
Yes, I’ve had moments where I thought I wanted something, and when I got it, it didn’t really satisfy me. But on the other hand, I truly believe God has always blessed me with what I needed — even when I didn’t realize it.
When I first started, I used to tell people, ‘I don’t decorate parties, I only make party favors and backdrops.’ I’ll never forget one day riding in the car with my husband, I said out loud that I wanted to make party favors for a Monsters Inc. themed party. Literally minutes later, someone texted me asking if I could decorate a Monsters Inc. party — not just favors, but the full event. That was the moment I realized event planning was always part of God’s plan for me, even if I didn’t see it yet.
I thought I only wanted to create small pieces, but He showed me that my purpose was bigger. Looking back, I see how everything aligned — and even though it wasn’t exactly what I asked for, it turned out to be exactly what I needed.
