We recently had the chance to connect with Dorothy Horton and have shared our conversation below.
Dorothy, so good to connect and we’re excited to share your story and insights with our audience. There’s a ton to learn from your story, but let’s start with a warm up before we get into the heart of the interview. What do you think is misunderstood about your business?
People think home care includes medical services.
Caregiving takes physical strength, emotional resilience, training, and the ability to manage unpredictable situations. A good caregiver uses judgment, patience, and communication skills daily.
Caregivers provide critical support that keeps clients safe and independent:
Monitoring changes in condition, reducing fall risks,
managing dementia behaviors, encouraging mobility and proper nutrition,
offering companionship that reduces depression.
Many people think this is a babysitting business. But it’s very misunderstood, and it’s to be taken serious. It’s also beyond a 9am-5p, this type of work oftentimes is mentally taken home
and is on our minds all the time.
Can you briefly introduce yourself and share what makes you or your brand unique?
I am the owner and founder of Quality care senior servivces, we provide high-quality non-medical home care services that help seniors and adults with disabilities live safely and comfortably at home. Our trained caregivers assist with personal care, companionship, meal preparation, mobility support, and more. We are committed to dependable service, compassionate care, and personalized support for every client we serve.”
I value being an independent owner because franchises often require fixed pricing or strict service packages.
As an independent owner, I can:Set my own rates, offer flexible hourly, create specialty programs (dementia, post-op, veterans, 24/7 care),adjust quickly based on client needs.
I’m not locked into corporate structures.
Amazing, so let’s take a moment to go back in time. Who saw you clearly before you could see yourself?
My dear Mother saw me before I could clearly see myself. She recognized my strengths, my fears, and my potential long before I understood them. She believed in the version of me that I had not yet grown into, and her vision helped guide me toward who I am today.. She showed me the example of how a caring person supposed to be and act toward a community of people who appreciates love and compassion. I witnessed her giving her last.,praying over others and her sacrifice in time and effort made toward others.
What have been the defining wounds of your life—and how have you healed them?
The defining wounds of my life were caused by hurtful words and people I thought I could trust.
Those past experiences shaped me, challenged me, and at times broke pieces of who I was. But today, I stand healed. What once wounded me no longer defines me. I’ve reclaimed my peace, my strength, and my identity… People do not define me, My help, my trust my everything comes from my creator.
Next, maybe we can discuss some of your foundational philosophies and views? Is the public version of you the real you?
The public version of me has always been the real me. From childhood to now, I’ve never pretended to be anything other than who I truly am.
My love for people was planted from my parents.as a child and I’ve never strayed from loving people as a whole.I could never hate my worst enemy.I’ve always been a giver in spite of any circumstance
Okay, so before we go, let’s tackle one more area. What is the story you hope people tell about you when you’re gone?
I want people to say that I lived with honesty, compassion, and courage. That I showed up as my true self, even when life tried to break me. That I loved deeply, healed fully, and helped others rise. I want them to remember that I gave more than I took, and that my presence made life a little gentler for those around me.
