An Inspired Chat with Dr. Nicole Ware Spencer

We’re looking forward to introducing you to Dr. Nicole Ware Spencer. Check out our conversation below.

Good morning Nicole, we’re so happy to have you here with us and we’d love to explore your story and how you think about life and legacy and so much more. So let’s start with a question we often ask: What do the first 90 minutes of your day look like?
During the first 90 minutes of the day, it starts off hectic and then gradually slows down. Let me explain. We have four dogs who insist they must get up when a parent wakes up, so at 5 am when my alarm goes off, tag, I’m it! All four dogs run at full speed to the kitchen to eat. Then, they all go outside to handle their business. After that, they either go back to bed or go for a walk with their dad. Once the “girls” are settled, I can finally find my rhythm for the morning. I usually like to go on a silent prayer walk for about 2 miles. Then, I return home and do a Christian meditation. Afterward, I enjoy doing another devotional, but this one is in Spanish. I also like to practice gratitude, engage in a silent meditation, and watch the sunrise.

Can you briefly introduce yourself and share what makes you or your brand unique?
Hi! I’m Dr. Nicole, a licensed clinical psychologist and yoga therapist. I founded Asili Wellness as a lively and supportive space for Women of Color. Here, you’ll find a caring environment where you can flourish in your journey toward mental, physical, and spiritual well-being. We embrace cultural relevance and accessibility, making your path to healing both possible and truly achievable. Join us in thriving together!

Great, so let’s dive into your journey a bit more. What was your earliest memory of feeling powerful?
I remember when I was about four or five years old, I told my mother that I wanted to be a lawyer, doctor, teacher, author, ballerina, and about four other occupations. I truly believed that I could do anything I set my mind to and felt incredibly powerful. It was also encouraged by my parents. They put me on an empowerment path by teaching me how to read by age three, starting kindergarten at age 4, and first grade when I was 5. By the time I was in first grade, I was an avid reader (Clifford the Big Red Dog was my jam!), powerful, fearless, and unstoppable.

If you could say one kind thing to your younger self, what would it be?
If I could tell my younger self one kind thing, it would be to keep living fearlessly and joyfully. Looking back, I realize I was a child who fully embraced life! I didn’t know fear, did my own thing, didn’t overanalyze myself about being “enough,” and enjoyed laughter! I didn’t take myself too seriously.

Sure, so let’s go deeper into your values and how you think. Is the public version of you the real you?
The public version of me is genuinely the real me. I no longer can put on a facade for others’ comfort. What you see is what you get with me, both publicly and behind closed doors. My faith is important to me. I love laughing, traveling, and reading. I am passionate about women’s health and wellness. I love animals. I am warm, compassionate, and try not to give too many people side-eye. And I probably have too many plants, but oh well. I am the same version of myself during sessions with clients, at church, and in the new spot dancing salsa.

Okay, so let’s keep going with one more question that means a lot to us: When do you feel most at peace?
I feel most at peace when I am outdoors, especially sitting on the sun porch watching the sunrise or sunset and listening to birdsong. I also feel most at peace when I am walking along a quiet beach with sand between my toes, the warmth of the sun on my skin, hearing the waves lap, and inhaling the fresh or salty air. During these peaceful moments, I feel God’s presence, creation, and beauty surround and fill me.
