An Inspired Chat with James Kyles of Fulton County

We’re looking forward to introducing you to James Kyles. Check out our conversation below.

James, really appreciate you sharing your stories and insights with us. The world would have so much more understanding and empathy if we all were a bit more open about our stories and how they have helped shaped our journey and worldview. Let’s jump in with a fun one: Who are you learning from right now?
I am currently learning from my beloved mother. One of the most precious lessons she teaches me is strength. In January 2025, I lost my father after his long battle with congestive heart failure, and in September 2025, I lost my grandmother to dementia. Despite these deep losses, my mother continues to carry herself with resilience and grace. Watching how she endures and remains strong inspires me daily, and I am learning from her example how to face hardship with courage and faith.

Can you briefly introduce yourself and share what makes you or your brand unique?
My name is James Kyles, and I am the Founder and Executive Director of Destined for Greatness Outreach Youth Center, Inc. (DFG), a 501(c)(3) nonprofit organization dedicated to serving elementary, middle, and high school students in the Greater Atlanta metro area for 15 years.

At DFG, we believe every young person carries a seed of greatness within them. Our mission is to nurture that potential by providing mentorship, educational support, leadership development, and enrichment programs that prepare students not just for success in school, but also for life. We work closely with youth to help them build confidence, resilience, and vision for their future.

What makes us unique is our holistic approach to youth empowerment. We don’t just focus on academics—we invest in the whole child. Through mentorship, workshops, community service projects, and life skills training, we create safe spaces where students can discover their passions, overcome challenges, and develop the tools they need to reach their goals.

DFG also serves as a bridge between students, families, and communities. By fostering meaningful partnerships, we’re able to connect young people with resources, opportunities, and role models who can guide them along their journey. Our programs are designed not only to inspire, but also to equip—because we know that lasting impact comes from both motivation and preparation.

Currently, we are expanding our outreach to reach more students, strengthening our mentoring initiatives, and building collaborations that allow us to have an even greater impact across Atlanta. My passion for this work comes from a deep belief that no child should feel unseen, unheard, or unsupported. Every student deserves the chance to realize their potential, and at DFG, we are committed to walking alongside them as they pursue their dreams.

Great, so let’s dive into your journey a bit more. Who taught you the most about work?
My father taught me the most about work. He didn’t just talk about responsibility, but he lived it every day. Through his dedication and perseverance, he showed me what it means to commit fully to your family, your values, and your goals. Even when faced with challenges, he remained steady, hardworking, and faithful. Watching him taught me that real work isn’t just about earning a living, but it’s about building character, keeping your word, and leaving a legacy of integrity. His example continues to guide the way I approach leadership, service, and the work I do today.

Was there ever a time you almost gave up?
Yes. When building an organization and balancing life, there were moments when I felt overwhelmed especially when some parents didn’t fully appreciate the work we were doing. Starting something from the ground up takes long hours, sacrifice, and a lot of heart, and it can be discouraging when the impact isn’t always recognized. There were times I questioned whether all the effort was worth it.

But in those moments, I reminded myself why I started: to serve young people and help them see their own potential. Every time I saw a student grow in confidence, achieve a goal, or simply feel supported, it reignited my passion. Those small wins reminded me that even if not everyone notices, the work matters deeply. That kept me moving forward.

Sure, so let’s go deeper into your values and how you think. What’s a cultural value you protect at all costs?
Integrity. No matter the situation, I believe in being honest, consistent, and true to my word. Integrity builds trust, and without trust, there’s no real foundation for relationships, leadership, or community. At Destined for Greatness, I make sure our students, staff, and partners know that we stand on values that don’t bend with circumstances. Protecting integrity at all costs ensures that our work has lasting impact and that the people we serve can depend on us fully.

Okay, we’ve made it essentially to the end. One last question before you go. What is the story you hope people tell about you when you’re gone?
I hope people say that I lived a life of service and purpose that I poured into others and left them better than I found them. I want my story to be that I helped young people believe in themselves, that I created opportunities where there were none, and that I stood firm in my faith and values. More than accomplishments or titles, I hope the story told about me is that I loved people, invested in my community, and left a legacy of hope and greatness that will continue to inspire future generations.
