Jessica, we’re thrilled to have you with us today. Before we jump into your intro and the heart of the interview, let’s start with a bit of an ice breaker: What are you being called to do now, that you may have been afraid of before?
For years, I poured my energy into building brands for others. Now, after navigating a significant personal chapter, I’m being called to build my own — one rooted in purpose. I’ve shifted from hesitation to action, using my 25+ years in marketing to empower small business owners to tell their stories, strengthen their strategies, and grow with intention.

Can you briefly introduce yourself and share what makes you or your brand unique?
I’m Jessica Black, founder of Deep Blue Strategies, a strategic marketing consultancy helping small business owners navigate growth with intention. With over 25 years of experience in advertising, digital, and social strategy — partnering with national brands like Arby’s, Triscuit, and Discover Financial — I’ve learned what drives results and what drives people.

Deep Blue Strategies was created to bridge that gap. I bring big-brand strategy to small business owners in a way that feels attainable and authentic. My focus now is on empowering entrepreneurs with the tools, insights, and confidence they need to make marketing work smarter — not harder.

Great, so let’s dive into your journey a bit more. Who were you before the world told you who you had to be?
Before the world told me who I had to be, I was someone who laughed freely, loved openly, and believed in the beauty of possibility. Over the years, the world — especially the fast-paced world of advertising — taught me to push through, stay composed, and never ask for help. Like many women balancing career and motherhood, I forgot to ask myself, What do I actually want?

Finding my way back to that version of me — the one who dances, laughs, and lets love in — has been the most meaningful transformation of my life.

Do you remember a time someone truly listened to you?
A dear friend and former colleague once listened to me in a way that changed everything. She had already taken her own leap of faith in life and career, and instead of giving advice, she simply reflected back what she saw in me — potential, purpose, and readiness. That conversation reminded me that God places people in our lives at the exact right time. Her encouragement gave me the push to live out what had been on my heart for years: helping small business owners grow through Deep Blue Strategies.

Next, maybe we can discuss some of your foundational philosophies and views? What truths are so foundational in your life that you rarely articulate them?
Authenticity is one of my deepest values — it’s the foundation of everything I do. After years in an industry that can often blur the line between perception and truth, I’ve learned that clarity and honesty matter most. I show up as myself, every time. I don’t chase trends or play games; I focus on helping businesses grow with integrity, transparency, and purpose.

Okay, we’ve made it essentially to the end. One last question before you go. What do you understand deeply that most people don’t?
What I understand deeply is the power of truly listening. Too often, people rush to respond instead of taking the time to hear what someone actually needs. You don’t have to have the perfect answer right away — in fact, thoughtful silence can lead to the most meaningful solutions. I’ve learned that real progress, whether in marketing or life, comes from slowing down enough to focus on what really matters instead of talking in circles.
