Renee Lowe shared their story and experiences with us recently and you can find our conversation below.
Hi Renee, thank you so much for taking time out of your busy day to share your story, experiences and insights with our readers. Let’s jump right in with an interesting one: What do you think is misunderstood about your business?
The most misunderstood thing I run into in my business or better said, industry, is people think they can flick a switch and go viral. I have had people ask me how to go viral. It is such a loaded question and really shows how much people are obsessed with being seen and not always with substance. I have seen a lot of folks go viral and then you never hear from them again after the dance dies down or the meme gets overused. Authenticity is the key. Go viral for your transparency. Go viral for your giving spirit. Go viral because you simply love what you do and you put out quality content. Virality is a fleeting thing and cancel culture is real! People love you today and hate you tomorrow. Just stay present and authentic to you. Put your unique spin on current events and your audience will come. Stop trying to pop up on the scene and then you get there and can’t sustain. Your vibe will attract your tribe. I always encourage clients to BE AUTHENTIC!

Appreciate your sharing that. Let’s talk about your life, growing up and some of topics and learnings around that. Who taught you the most about work?
My maternal grandparents. They worked for themselves when I was a child growing up going back and forth to Jamaica in the summertime. From just a few months old, my parents and I went to Jamaica for the entire summer every year, coming back to the states just in time for Labor Day. I LOVED it! I learned a lot watching my Grandad farm his land (with chickens) and my would Grandma crochet and sew clothes from scratch. There was always someone coming up to the house to buy bananas, chickens that we cleaned and plucked, ice, limeade and all sorts of fruit that they had growing on the property. They even had a goat that provided milk. It was amazing to watch as a child and I got to learn so much from that example. My grandmother would crochet these placemat doilies that look like lace and then she should starch them. She would lay them out to dry in the backyard under the hot sun. They were beautiful and people would come up to the house to buy them in sets for gifts or for their own homes. My Mom still has many of them around her house. My grandmother could crochet any shape of flower or animal with no pattern! We still don’t know how she used to do it. We just knew it was an amazing God-given gift! Their work ethic was second to none and it continues to have a profound effect on me.
When you were sad or scared as a child, what helped?
Creating. I was always preoccupied with creating and reading stories, music, even clothing to take my mind of of sad things. Even taking apart an electronic toy or appliance to see why it was not working brought me joy. LOL! I will see the problem in something and work tirelessly to find a solution. Also, I don’t gatekeep either, so when I find a solution, I share it. Some people say I shouldn’t, but that is how I started my business. I identified people’s pain points in their business and became the extra hands that they needed. You can take anything and flip it into something useful. It just takes a little thought and creativity.
I think our readers would appreciate hearing more about your values and what you think matters in life and career, etc. So our next question is along those lines. What are the biggest lies your industry tells itself?
Whew! This is a huge but simple. It says that you need to become someone else. You have to change for whoever is in the room at the moment. That is called acting! If you are not an actor trying out for a role, what are you doing?! Be authentically you and the right team, opportunities and quite frankly, blessings will come your way.
Thank you so much for all of your openness so far. Maybe we can close with a future oriented question. Are you doing what you were born to do—or what you were told to do?
I am definitely doing what I was born to do. I always knew that I wanted to help people excel in things, because I learn along the way as well. If you, as a boss, business owner, etc…stop learning, then you have lost. So, I keep learning while teaching people that they can successfully fly as well, even if they are starting small. I even took a class that I created years ago and flipped it into a book named, CEO In Sneakers! There is so much knowledge that people want to learn. Take what you know and monetize it!
