We’re looking forward to introducing you to Rica Tan. Check out our conversation below.
Hi Rica, thank you so much for taking time out of your busy day to share your story, experiences and insights with our readers. Let’s jump right in with an interesting one: What is something outside of work that is bringing you joy lately?
Although my work lights a fire in me… But it’s the quiet, ordinary moments with my family that fill my soul: morning hugs, shared meals and our togetherness. In those simple, fleeting moments, I find the kind of joy that no accomplishment could ever match.
Can you briefly introduce yourself and share what makes you or your brand unique?
I’m passionate about creating meaningful experiences—whether through my work, my brand, or the connections I build with others along the way. I’m the founder of Etude entertainment and cofounder of Luminious by Etude; Etude was born from a deep passion for both art and impact. We specialize in producing compelling, high-quality content that blends music creativity with purpose.
What makes our work special is the heart behind it. We’re not just focused on products or services—we’re building something that reflects real values: authenticity, community, and purpose.
Appreciate your sharing that. Let’s talk about your life, growing up and some of topics and learnings around that. What breaks the bonds between people—and what restores them?
I think, what breaks the bonds between people is often a breakdown in trust and understanding. When communication falters, assumptions take over, or when people feel unheard, disrespected, or betrayed, those invisible threads that connect us start to fray. Sometimes, it’s fear or pride that gets in the way. Making it hard to be vulnerable or to admit when we’re wrong.
But what restores those bonds is often the courage to show up with openness and empathy. It’s about listening deeply, not just to respond but to truly understand. Apologies, forgiveness, and honest conversations can begin to heal wounds. Shared experiences, kindness, and acts of care remind us of our common humanity.
At the heart of it, restoration happens when we choose connection over division, vulnerability over defense, pride over ego, and love over fear. It’s never easy, but those efforts create the strongest, most lasting bonds.
What did suffering teach you that success never could?
The value of resilience and humility. When things fall apart or don’t go as planned, you’re forced to confront your limits, your fears, and what truly matters. It strips away the surface and leaves you face-to-face with yourself in a way success often masks.
Through suffering, I learned to appreciate growth as a process, not just a destination. It showed me empathy for others who struggle, a deeper patience, and a stronger sense of purpose grounded in authenticity rather than external validation.
Success feels good. it’s a sign you’ve achieved something. But suffering teaches you who you are when all the achievements fade away. That’s a kind of wisdom that success alone can’t give..
I think our readers would appreciate hearing more about your values and what you think matters in life and career, etc. So our next question is along those lines. What are the biggest lies your industry tells itself?
The wedding industry can sometimes make couples feel like there’s a formula to a perfect day. Everything big, shiny, and on trend. But what really matters is “authenticity”. A wedding or an event should be a true reflection of the couple’s unique story and shared values.
Spending on a wedding isn’t about following a checklist. it’s about investing in the elements that bring a vision to life in an authentic way. Whether it’s choosing a venue that feels personal, hiring vendors who understand the couple’s style, or creating moments that are meaningful to the couple and their loved ones, thoughtful spending helps turn a unique story into an unforgettable experience.
When authenticity guides these choices, the day becomes more than just an event. it becomes a celebration of love in a way that feels real and deeply joyful. That’s where the true value lies.
Okay, we’ve made it essentially to the end. One last question before you go. What is the story you hope people tell about you when you’re gone?
I hope people will tell a story of someone who led with purpose and heart.
That I created work that mattered. Not just because it was beautiful or successful, but because it made people feel something, connected them, or gave a voice to stories that might have otherwise gone unheard.
I hope they’ll say I built more than a brand; that I built relationships, moments, and experiences that left a lasting imprint.
That I was generous with my time, kind in my actions, and unafraid to take risks for the sake of something meaningful.
Most of all, I hope the story isn’t just about achievements, but about impact. That through creativity, love, and authenticity, I made life a little richer for the people whose paths crossed mine.
