Art & Life with Austin Blue

Today we’d like to introduce you to Austin Blue.

Austin, please kick things off for us by telling us about yourself and your journey so far.
I’m a San Francisco native that has been living in Atlanta for the last 7 years. I’ve always been into art and drawing but I didn’t really become serious as an artist until about 3 years ago which is when I started painting. I took a few classes at City College for illustration, but other than that I am self-taught. I feel so uninteresting when I write about myself, haha. Anyway, I’m now a muralist and curator making my way and hopefully inspiring others in the process.

Can you give our readers some background on your art?
I create paintings that are often representational but sometimes abstract, with vibrant colors and geometric themes. My recurring character named after my younger autistic brother Zane, is a colorful polar bear comprised of varying geometric shapes. I use him as a sort of mute vehicle that communicates thru its patterns and color. To me, it’s something recognizable yet different since Polar bears are void of color in an environment with a very limited color palate (blue, basically). That to me represents individuality, standing out. I want people to see my work and be inspired to be themselves and pursue their dreams.

What would you recommend to an artist new to the city, or to art, in terms of meeting and connecting with other artists and creatives?
I only think it can be lonely if you don’t make an effort to go out and be involved. You’re not gonna meet people from the safety of your studio or house, it just doesn’t work that way. I can definitely say once I reached out to become involved in the artist community (my first step being me working with Wonderroot) my productivity went up greatly. Meeting other artists in my opinion is important because you learn and get to experience different perspectives, on top of making new friendships.

My advice to any artists out there looking to connect would be to go to your local art shows and look up events. Volunteer if you want, just get out there!

What’s the best way for someone to check out your work and provide support?
I have public works around Decatur, Cabbagetown, Reynoldstown, and Downtown Atlanta. My website is Austinblueart.net, and my works can be purchased at either my website or Etsy.com/shop/properblue
