Art & Life with Becky Raisman

Today we’d like to introduce you to Becky Raisman.

Becky, please kick things off for us by telling us about yourself and your journey so far.
I grew up in the Chicago suburbs then I moved down south to the southeast region. I’ve been singing since elementary school, middle school, high school and college. I did choir from elementary through college. I started voice lessons at 15 years old, and throughout the years I studied with different voice teachers. I went to Columbia College Chicago from 2000-2007 grad opted with a degree in performing arts. While at Columbia I participated in Student Concert Series, Choir, Columbia College Singers Alliance, Jazz/Pop choir, sang at Columbia College open house at the Auditorium theatre, and sing at an arts festival at Columbia at the end of the year at Buddy Guy Legends. I also learned the keyboards at Columbia and I’ve been taking lessons for 3 1/2 years. I also did Singer Spotlight and Chick Singers Night. In high school I took acting classes and did summer theater. I also did About Face Theater was in a show in 2003 and summer of 2004 they gave me a summer internship. Started singing at open mics and long time ago in 2010 took a break and went back to it last year. Then my family and I moved down south and I started going to open mics right away and meet new people. I love the weather down here and the people are great and very respectful. I also started doing stand-up comedy in 2017 at Annoyance theater and Improv Playhouse, was in a few showcases and did open mics at Laugh Factory. I was in an adult band and voice lessons at School of Rock and was a great experience. They are family they teach you music but you learn about life and they include everybody and no one is left out. Great program. I’ve done a lot of extra work for TV and movies and the southeast region is booming with lots of TV and film work especially in Atlanta so I’m in a good market. Right now I’m looking for representation right now anywhere in the southeast especially in Atlanta. I do it all sing, beat box I like to make percussion noises with my mouth, play keyboards, stand up, improv. I like to learn new things.

Can you give our readers some background on your art?
Well, I sing, play keyboards, beat box, stand up. I want to inspire people to learn an instrument, try new things, have an open mind, try comedy. To think outside of the box, to meet new people, to create art. With music I like to play all kinds of genres, like pop, top 40, rock, classic rock, blues.

What responsibility, if any, do you think artists have to use their art to help alleviate problems faced by others? Has your art been affected by issues you’ve concerned about?
Well, with all the crazy stuff going on I think artists have ideas to create. With stand up my material is making fun of myself and current events put some comedy. With music I like to do cover songs by different artists. We all need to love and help one another. We need more love and hugs and positive energy.

What’s the best way for someone to check out your work and provide support?
