Art & Life with Chantae Cann

Today we’d like to introduce you to Chantae Cann.

Chantae, please kick things off for us by telling us about yourself and your journey so far.
My mother was the music teacher at the school I attended as a child, so music was always in my blood, but I was way too shy to sing in front of people. In my early teens, I joined a youth group at a church with a couple of friends of mine and was later “forced” to be on the praise team. I really struggled with my confidence & creativity until a young lady, who is now my “big sis,” took me under her wing and helped cultivate my entire artistry. I didn’t really have a clue that I would be a full-time artist, but between singing in church and later singing at some open mic jams, I fell in LOVE with the live performance aspect.

Once I started developing my sound, I was then called as a background singer for some local Gospel artists in Atlanta. The more & more I sang out, the better I became and sooner than later I was singing everywhere ALL the time. My “big sis” would eventually get me in the door to sing background for India. Arie, which was my 1st mainstream BGV gig. I ended up touring with India for ten years, which is a LONG time, but it literally grew me into the artist I am today. In the middle of traveling with India I did some collabs with some really cool artists/bands and eventually took the time to work on my own solo projects. I released my Sophomore album last year, and that’s my story in a nutshell! 😉

Can you give our readers some background on your art?
I am neo-jazz soul singer/songwriter currently residing in Atlanta, GA. I ALWAYS strive to make music that inspires, uplifts, encourages and empowers. I want people to take away a sense of freedom in accepting one’s entire self as well as lots of love & sunshine!

What responsibility, if any, do you think artists have to use their art to help alleviate problems faced by others? Has your art been affected by issues you’ve concerned about?
I believe as an artist; it’s always our job to continuously reflect the times. People want to know that, while we have worked really hard on refining our crafts and building our brands, that we are still aware of everything good, bad & ugly that is taking place in the world. We may not be able to wave a magic wand and make all the bad things disappear, but we can raise our voices on our platforms and bring awareness in our own way.

What’s the best way for someone to check out your work and provide support?
I’m currently doing some spot dates in the U.S. until it’s time to tour again. I hope to hit up a EURO tour in 2019 as well as the Capital Jazz Cruise in January.
