Art & Life with Kate Lee

Today we’d like to introduce you to Kate Lee.

Kate, please kick things off for us by telling us about yourself and your journey so far.
We struggled with infertility for a few years, and I swore I would get a nice camera and take millions of pictures if I was ever lucky enough to be a mommy. Once my daughter was born, I couldn’t stop taking her picture. From then on I was always asking friends if I could take their pictures and I was watching constant YouTube videos to understand my camera and what lenses were best and what makes a good picture. I was hooked. This year (after finally getting my son to sleep through the night!) it felt like time to go for it. Thus maple and oak photography was created!

Can you give our readers some background on your art?
I’m a photographer based in Buckhead, Atlanta. I take lifestyle photography. What that means is that rather than losing your family, I just photograph your day. I tell my clients to just imagine they’re spending a day with their loved ones and I just happen to be there. I may suggest you sit a certain way, but usually, my favorite pictures come when clients think I’m done or that I’m testing my light. But I think the most fun thing I do is my “big brother/sister camera”. It’s an Instax Polaroid camera that I let my older siblings take picture with, and then they get to take them home at the end of the shoot! Kids love it, and I love how much fun everyone has with it

Do you think conditions are generally improving for artists? What more can cities and communities do to improve conditions for artists?
I’ve been working on this one. I have personal mentors that have been so helpful. They’re the ones saying “why not try this?” when I feel totally overwhelmed. I haven’t found a photography mentor to work with personally but I’m so obsessed with Brooke Whitney Photography, and I would love to learn anything at all from her. I consider her the absolute best and even just following her on Instagram gives me so much inspiration.
