Art & Life with Laura Vela

Today we’d like to introduce you to Laura Vela.

Laura, please kick things off for us by telling us about yourself and your journey so far.
I am a chicana artist currently working from south Atlanta. My work revolves around identity and social issues. I am also a new mom and learning how to navigate doing both (motherhood and art) while also still working a fulltime job. I wish to be an advocate for other mother artists, and an example for being able to do it all and have it all! My work also deals a lot with immigrant rights, and I come from an undocumented family.

Can you give our readers some background on your art?
As I mentioned, my work deals with identity, social issues, and immigrant rights. My mother came to this country from Mexico when she was 8 months pregnant with me. That fact inspires me, encourages me, keeps me going, and also guilts me to some extent. My mother came to this country to give me a better life, and it’s something that is deeply embedded in every decision I make, and only amplified by becoming a mother myself. My work mainly consists of paintings and photography.

How do you think about success, as an artist, and what do quality do you feel is most helpful?
I define success by creating artwork I am proud of.

What’s the best way for someone to check out your work and provide support?
My work can often be seen throughout Atlanta at different small galleries. I have also done a mural and collaborated on a second on Wylie for Forward Warrior.
