Today we’d like to introduce you to Robert & Tiffany Peterson.
Robert & Tiffany, please kick things off for us by telling us about yourself and your journey so far.
We certainly didn’t grow up thinking we would be wedding or interior photographers. Tiffany was working in the education field as a pre-school teacher and I was working in the movie industry as a film editor. After our wedding Tiff was inspired to start shooting photos – mostly families and kids. I picked up Photoshop so I could edit her images, and soon I found myself stepping out and shooting alongside her. When the first wedding came our way we actively tried to scare them off by suggesting a price tag we never thought they would go for. We had no wedding work to show, or wedding experience for that matter, but they cut us a check on the spot and suddenly it was trial by fire – we had just enrolled ourselves in a crash course on wedding photography.
It’s hard to believe that was already seven years ago, and we will always be grateful to that first couple for placing so much trust in us and sending us along this amazing journey.
Can you give our readers some background on your art?
We are a husband and wife wedding and interiors photography team.
Over the past four years our business has really grown with two distinct personalities that keep us busy throughout the year. Rustic White, which handles all of our wedding workload and Rustic White Interiors, which handles our interior and travel portfolio. Naturally there is a tremendous amount of overlap as traveling for an out of state wedding often leads to a short excursion to build our travel portfolio, but when thinking of our business we think of these two entities as very separate businesses.
We adore shooting weddings not only because they’re some of life’s most beautiful, romantic, and irresistibly joyful events, but also because the pure love of each couple we work with touches us forever. To honor this love, we believe each couple deserves gorgeous images and an amazing experience of being photographed – one that makes them feel as relaxed and at ease as when hanging out with friends. This is why taking the time to nourish a relationship of trust and support with each of our couple’s is our focus from the moment we meet. By creating fresh, authentic atmospheres where the loveliest moments arise naturally, we simply free the space for our couple’s natural personalities to shine. And this is exactly where real, genuine, breathtaking images are born.
While capturing memorable moments worth treasuring for newlyweds, we were deeply inspired by the slower pace that food and interiors photography offered. A fortunate connection early in our careers led us to the opportunity to be able to shoot for clients like HGTV, Atlanta Homes and Lifestyle and Domino Magazine.
After collaborating on photography projects all across the globe, travel photography was naturally woven into Rustic White. Travel plays a key role in our lives, always fueling our creativity and sense of adventure. With our two daughters in tow, we enjoy exploring mountain ranges and low prairies alike in search of stories worth telling. We bring this same spirit of intentionality to every space, subject, and place I capture.
What would you recommend to an artist new to the city, or to art, in terms of meeting and connecting with other artists and creatives?
You have to ask. Take the risk of rejection and reach out to others on social media or at an event. Some of our closest friends, who were also our mentors became just that because we took a chance and e-mailed them one day. Richard and Amy McDowell of Red Leaf Studios are amazing photographers and educators out of Victoria, Canada, and we admired their work so much as we were starting out. One day we just e-mailed them to ask if they would consider reviewing our portfolio. In this process we became great friends and visit them yearly as we all have kids about the same age.
What’s the best way for someone to check out your work and provide support?
Perhaps the easiest place for people to see our latest work is on Instagram. @rusticwhite and @rusticwhiteinteriors.
Our business homepage are rusticwhite.com and rusticwhiteinteriors.com, but we will admit that Instagram probably gets the most active updates.
We love to hear from people so always feel free to reach out to us on social or just drop us an e-mail to say hi. We are big advocates for building community and helping others, as so many great creatives poured knowledge and inspiration into us as we started out.
