Today we’d like to introduce you to Derrick Henderson.
Derrick, we’d love to hear your story and how you got to where you are today both personally and as an artist.
I am originally a Native of Toledo, Ohio. I have always had a healthy taste for art as well as film/photography since I was a child. My mother modeled when I was growing up, and she was featured at the Toledo Art Museum often. I took art classes every year all through school due to my love of art. (My mother still has my work hanging in various places of her home) I was handed a camera at a young age by my mother and images have been a friend of mine ever since. I eventually joined the military (Go Navy!!) and had the opportunity to travel to new places and meet new people. This greatly opened my mind up even more to the art around me every day.
I continue to enjoy the beauty of the art around me. I am always looking to network and work with new people/companies in photography and film and find new creative ways to express others visions as well as my own.
We’d love to hear more about your art. What do you do you do and why and what do you hope others will take away from your work?
My photography and film work is an expression of what I or others may want to bring to life. My projects are simply a thought in a reflection of time. I hope to provoke thought with my artwork and connect with the person viewing it. I create art to leave behind a beacon that my sons Julian and Korbin can look to for inspiration as they find the motivation to accomplish their dreams. My message and inspiration to others are that I hope to have people take away a sense of appreciation to have the opportunity to enjoy life itself as they see it. My artwork is freedom plain and simple.
What do you think it takes to be successful as an artist?
I define success as accomplishing goals you set for yourself no matter how large or small. As long as you reach your personal goals for your art, then you are successful.
I think perseverance is essential to an artist’s success. People will tell you that you will never “make” it, not believe in your vision for yourself and want you to be what they think you should be. This may be people closest to you or complete strangers. But overall, It is essential that you BELIEVE IN YOURSELF, the world’s greatest innovators all had the perseverance to bring their visions to life.
