Today we’d like to introduce you to Donovan Patterson.
Hi Donovan, so excited to have you on the platform. So before we get into questions about your work-life, maybe you can bring our readers up to speed on your story and how you got to where you are today?
I was born in 1996 to Donna and Lewis Patterson (both deceased). Following the death of my mother, I started writing poetry as a coping mechanism. That coping mechanism paired with my love for music while attending Dunbar Performing Arts Magnet School provided the catalyst necessary to motivate me into taking something I was, eccentrically, passionate about seriously. I decided that most of the people around me seem unhappy or just content with life. So it’s been my goal to strive for happiness, stop just settling for the status quo and live life the way you see fit. I’ve grown to understand that if we’re made in God’s image, “the creator of the world,” then why do we spend so little of our time creating. Now I’m creating my own path in life, separate from what’s expected of me but grounded in what I believe is best.
Alright, so let’s dig a little deeper into the story – has it been an easy path overall and if not, what were the challenges you’ve had to overcome?
My life hasn’t been a walk in the park. My grandfather died in front of me when I was seven. I lost my mom to breast cancer when I was ten. I spent months going back in forth to custody court, where I was placed in my aunt’s care. When I turned 16, she also died from cancer. After moving back in with my grandmother, I was able to graduate from high school and receive multiple scholarships. While in college, I lost my dad, who wasn’t around much to begin with and the next year, another one of my aunts died. I’ve been surrounded by death my whole, So I chose to live unapologetically.
Thanks – so what else should our readers know about your work and what you’re currently focused on?
I produce, write, record, mix and master my own music. Of course, I have a team or other professionals I can go to but I have the knowledge and skills necessary to do every aspect of my art myself. I currently have a developmental deal with D7mg/UMG and I’ve worked with various upcoming artists. I currently have two projects expected to drop in 2021 with a list of singles and features from upcoming and established artists on the scene.
What makes you happy?
I make me happy. At one point, I depended on other people’s expectations or approval for my happiness. But one by one, they died, leaving me to find someone to search for approval. Through growth and maturity, I found myself. Now I do what I love to do to make me happy, whatever it may be. Right now, it’s my love for music.
