Today we’d like to introduce you to Joshua Smith.
Hi Joshua, we’re thrilled to have a chance to learn your story today. So, before we get into specifics, maybe you can briefly walk us through how you got to where you are today?
I love photography so much so that if a day goes by when I’m not shooting or editing pictures, I immediately miss it. But I was actually forced into photography. While attending the illustrious Florida A&M University, I worked as a reporter for the Tallahassee Democrat. While working as an intern with a large staff, I simply had to report the stories and on-staff photographers were sent out for photos.
When I graduated with a Bachelor’s Degree in Print Journalism, I moved back to Metro Atlanta and began working at a local newspaper who basically handed me a camera and said good luck when I went to report on my first assignment. Over the next few months, I began to foster a passion for photography and after five years of reporting on local politics, murders, corruption and somewhat stressful subject matters, I decided to put down the pen and pick up the camera full time. Now because of a camera, a few good people and a lot of prayers, I have been blessed to photograph: The late-great Civil Rights legend Congressman John Lewis, Hip-Hop mogul Rick Ross, President Barack Obama and work for a list of others such as Verizon, Pepsi and Dillard’s. I have enjoyed traveling to Florida, Ohio, California and Indiana for photography but Atlanta is my base. I look forward to working with more families and individuals for many years to come to capture special moments in time and I am truly proud every time I see my work in people’s homes, businesses and other locations across the country.
Alright, so let’s dig a little deeper into the story – has it been an easy path overall and if not, what were the challenges you’ve had to overcome?
I don’t think an entrepreneur’s road to success or their sense of success is ever smooth. You often see the results/rewards of it and “being your own boss,” but what you don’t see is the sleepless nights meeting client deadlines or the constant mental, physical and financial investments that go into improving your craft. I think it can be a bumpy road with pitfalls and several different directions along the way but the destination is a great one and brings real fulfillment in the long run.
Thanks for sharing that. So, maybe next you can tell us a bit more about your work?
I think to know what truly sets me a part from others, you would have to ask the people I have worked with over the last decade. There are a lot of photographers throughout the state so for people to continually contact me for photo shoots is both an honor and a blessing. I specialize in event photography but due to the pandemic, I made a shift to family portraits and headshots while practicing fully safe and social distancing procedures. I have also lowered my price points because of financial strains many are facing resulting from living in a pandemic but I have remained to provide excellent customer service and punctuality.
Is there something surprising that you feel even people who know you might not know about?
Something surprising about me? Tough question. I like to sing, even though I’m not good at it. And I love children but I don’t have any of my own so I just hang out with my friends and relatives who have kids, that is until those kids get older and think I’m not cool enough for them to hang out with anymore. For now, “Uncle Josh” is cool.
