Today we’d like to introduce you to Joy Anna.
Alright, so thank you so much for sharing your story and insight with our readers. To kick things off, can you tell us a bit about how you got started?
I started off like most great singers – in the church but as I got older, I started developing a sense of sound for what I saw my music being from there. I would do covers on Instagram to some of my favorite songs. The one that gave me a big recognition first and sort of created my platform was a Gospal cover that I did to the YMW Melly ‘Murder on My Mind’ instrumental, which I remixed and sang “I got Jesus on my mind” in the video, which now has nearly one million views on Instagram. After that video, I started doing more covers and landed myself a manager that has been helping me develop as an r&b artist, taught me how to work in the studio, and has helped me put out my first EP entitled “Chapter XX” that was released late November.
We all face challenges, but looking back would you describe it as a relatively smooth road?
For the most part, it has been a smooth road for me. I say this because I feel like everything has been working out in my favor and I haven’t hit a big bump in the road yet when it comes to my artistry, fingers are crossed it can stay this way. But I am in college though, so sometimes I do have to do self-checks to keep a good balance between schoolwork, my artistry, and “normal” college social life. It’s rare that I actually get an overwhelming feeling of trying to maintain everything. It’s hectic, but I always make it work so it’s not a huge struggle.
Thanks for sharing that. So, maybe next you can tell us a bit more about your work?
I am a full-time student, artist, and songwriter. My whole life, I’ve been known as “the pretty girl with a great voice that sings extremely well,” but since I started my journey to becoming a mainstream artist, I have transformed to be known for my creative runs and my covers on Instagram and TikTok. At the moment, I’m most proud of the music that I just put out for the world to hear. I’ve always imagined releasing my own music as a child so this is definitely a huge accomplishment. Especially because I spent an extended number of hours in the studio. My entire team stayed locked in at least 36 hours to work on and record the majority of ‘Chapter XX’.
We also worked on a host of other songs for an upcoming Chicago female rap artist by the name Surreal that I’ll be featured on. I wrote “New Level” featuring Khadija Davis from my ep just earlier that day. I feel like that type of work ethic sets me aside from everyone else. Also, the fact that I stay true to myself, not letting “trends” change my views on anything. I’m a very versatile artist as far as genre, range, style, songwriting, etc., I can really pull off anything if I put my mind to it. When people look at me, I want people to know that you can still follow your dreams while getting the education you deserve. It’s nothing wrong with choosing two paths; you just have to be dedicated and prepared for the different dilemmas you’ll come across.
We’d love to hear about any fond memories you have from when you were growing up?
My favorite memory would be Christmas. I have always been fortunate enough to have a family willing to go all out, not only gift wise but the extremes they would go to have me believing in Santa Clause. They would have his boot prints throughout our home, toys appear overnight, make sure Santa left his crumbs from milk and cookies, and letters sent to the north pole every year. I remember it would always be a list and they would give it to me to pick from it so it would be like I got everything I asked Santa for. I don’t know if they may have had a catalogue of toys or something that they created the list from, I’m not sure how they pulled it off every year but those memories always stuck with me. This is why it’s always been my favorite time of year, holiday, and memories… hence, why I started 20 days until Christmas covers for my tik tok supporters.
