Today we’d like to introduce you to Kevin Bond.
Kevin, we’d love to hear your story and how you got to where you are today both personally and as an artist.
I was born and raised in a home filled with music. My Father had Gospel Music playing. The entire family sang Gospel, but my Mother loved the Motown Legends, plus Isaac Hayes, the O’Jays, and the Spinners. My Sisters were playing The Jackson Five, Earth Wind and Fire, and the Sylvers. I was the only one with no musical identity, but I was soaking all this music up.
Midway through High School, I started listening to Jazz and Classical which rounded out the cultures.
Little did I realize that that confluence of sound and genres would help mold me into the producer I am today.
While playing around the city of Chicago, I had many great musical experiences. One such experience leads me into the presence of all the Gospel Elites. One of them, Edwin Hawkins, the writer of “O Happy Day,” invited me on tour. I toured the world a few times with him, others, and now on my own. That opportunity opened the door to a musical career that has now spanned almost four decades.
We’d love to hear more about your art. What do you do and why and what do you hope others will take away from your work?
I’m one who started as a keyboardist, developed into a songwriter and publisher. That path took me into becoming a producer. As a producer, I exercise all those gifts and have taken the helm of some of the biggest records in Gospel Music today. Producers gather all the elements of a production together and bring it to life. We write or gather the songs, singer, musicians, & engineers together to take a project from start to finish. The finished product is what you hear on the radio, in film, or on TV.
That process has been simplified with the advent of Home Studios and electronic music. Now producers can do most of the work alone and invite people in only when we need them. I was on the cutting edge with that technology as well. I love the creative process and relish every opportunity to do so.
My songs are indeed inspirational and message-driven. My Gospel music is uplifting as well as educational about God, his Son, Jesus, and the life of a Christian. My secular music speaks of love, relationships, world peace and society in general. My Jazz is exciting, spirited, and moody as well.
For me, it all starts with a good song. Without a good song, the rest is laborious. With a good song, the work because easy, fun and exciting.
Do current events, local or global, affect your work and what you are focused on?
Local, National and International event and issues affect artists in a great way. It behooves artists today to be well aware of the culture, world issues, and events. Without a finger on the pules of our world, you’ll be singing your song alone. It’s wise to connect with the culture and create music everyone can connect with.
We see many artists try to exist outside of the culture to no avail. Or they’ll have a singular hit that resonates with people for a moment, but not for the long term.
If you want longevity in any industry you must connect with your fanbase and supporters, feel what they feel, speak to their ills and issues. It’s critical for success.
Do you have any events or exhibitions coming up? Where would one go to see more of your work? How can people support you and your artwork?
