Check out Kimberly Johns’s Artwork

Today we’d like to introduce you to Kimberly Johns.

Kimberly, we’d love to hear your story and how you got to where you are today both personally and as an artist.
My love for makeup artistry and the beauty world runs much deeper than what meets the eye… I started my business as a creative outlet. For me, makeup is therapy. #makeuptherapy It is my happy place where I find peace. However, many times when asked about why I started I simply state that I started doing favors and that my mom and sister encouraged me to make sure I was getting my coin!

While this is true, I also was at a point in my life where I was really frustrated. I would log onto Facebook or turn on the news to hear of the murder of yet another unarmed person of color. Going through the post’s comments and listening to some of the ignorant people around me would make my blood boil. I was internalizing it. I was becoming very negative. My mom even pointed out that all my posts and reposts were negative. I decided that enough was enough; I needed a hobby – something positive that made me smile.
I started, like many, on YouTube watching women and men of all shades and face shapes. Then I came home every day after work and created a look. I found a FaceBook group that had weekly makeup challenges. I was determined to get better and perfect my craft. Then my mom and sister would let me practice on them. Soon I ventured out to friends offering complimentary services to get my portfolio up. I never would have imagined that I would be #bookedandblessed have so much support from my community/clients or even to be able to turn my passion into profit.

I still get nervous before appointments, and the little voice in my head tries to talk me into canceling appointments but seeing my clients’ faces when I hand them a mirror and say this is the final look is really priceless. Women stopping me to compliment me on my makeup makes me feel so special.

People always tell me that I have great skin and that I’m naturally beautiful – “you don’t need makeup.” Nah, I don’t need it to feel beautiful, but I do need it to feel at peace.

We’d love to hear more about your art. What do you do and why and what do you hope others will take away from your work?
