Check out Kris J

Today we’d like to introduce you to Kris J.

Kris J, we’d love to hear your story and how you got to where you are today both personally and as an artist.
My name is Kris J I’ve been in love with hip hop since a kid. Growing up being a rapper wasn’t at the front of my to do list seeing that I was a pretty gifted track and field athlete my coaches, teachers, peers had already set in their minds that I would be successful with the sport. After Receiving full track&field scholarship to Bethune Cookman University, I knew that it was finally time to begin pursuing both, Even if it was just me rapping at events around campus when I wasn’t on the road with track. I honestly credit my university for giving me the belief to pursue my dreams as an artist. One thing about going to an HBCU is that you have to have tough skin because we can be extremely hard each other when presenting something that is unfamiliar. The pressure of performing in that auditorium in front of my peers built me for the independent route in the music industry. After graduating, I moved to Atlanta to full time pursue my career as an artist and still to this day no matter what stage I’m on I always think back to performing on my college campus which gives me that same feeling of being young black and fearless.

We’d love to hear more about your art. What do you do and why and what do you hope others will take away from your work?
Most people would say I make my music for the Cannabis community. To be more specific, I make music for the pot smoking workaholics. It’s a lifestyle. When listening it’s not just about weed, it’s about going through your process and having faith that you will see yourself to victory

I make music for the underdogs.

I love what I do
I love the power of the voice.

I hope to be an inspiration to others on what can happen if you never give up on your dreams.

Have things improved for artists? What should cities do to empower artists?
I feel that it’s open for everyone if you know your audience your market.

It’s hard for artists but with so many outlets to put content out, it’s even harder to make excuses.

Atlanta has taught me to grind and stay consistent. Even if you don’t have a big budget being consistent and building relationships will take you places. Atlanta is a great place for artists to really figure out their niche.

Do you have any events or exhibitions coming up? Where would one go to see more of your work? How can people support you and your artwork?
