Today, we’d like to introduce you to Adia Ayanna.
Hi Adia, thanks for sharing your story with us. To start, maybe you can tell our readers some of your backstory.
I started writing as a distraction in high school. It started with short stories on the back of quizzes, then led to me filling up multiple notebooks. I wrote my first fantasy novel at 16 and continued writing well into college.
My venture into ghostwriting began as a way to sharpen my writing voice…I had no idea it would lead to a career. Of course, the most noticeable thing about me is my hair, which is also connected to my writing and creativity.
Can you talk to us about the challenges and lessons you’ve learned along the way? Looking back, would you say it’s been easy or smooth in retrospect?
It’s been years of confusion and setbacks, but I wouldn’t have it any other way. Because I have so many interests — ghostwriting, Southern Gothic, natural hair, film analysis, fashion — I’ve had difficulty finding my lane.
I also struggled to find consistent writing clients, battling writer’s block. However, the difficult moments push me to adapt and hold onto my many creative interests.
Thanks – so, what else should our readers know about your work and what you’re currently focused on?
I wear many hats as a writer, but I’ve worked professionally as a contemporary romance ghostwriter for the last seven years. While I’ve ghostwritten self-help, memoirs, and children’s ebooks, romance is my bread and butter. I’m most proud of the relationships I’ve built with clients and of seeing how my writer’s voice has strengthened over the years.
Romance is such a captivating genre, and I love that I get to contribute strong narratives. As for what sets me apart…my romance writing can lean on the flowery side. It helps add a sweet, almost fantasy touch to love scenes that contemporary romance doesn’t typically highlight.
What makes you happy?
Lately happiness is free writing and trying my hand at more creative non-fiction. I love reading about Celtic mythology, afrofuturism, and finding local art. When I’m not writing, I enjoy nature, long walks, Dunkin’ coffee, and watching films with my cat.
