Today we’d like to introduce you to Alex Pryber.
Alright, so thank you so much for sharing your story and insight with our readers. To kick things off, can you tell us a bit about how you got started?
My first real exposure to photography was through my dad. He was the photographer for a local music festival in the town I grew up in. He would pay me $100 a day to carry around all his photography equipment and help him in whatever way he needs. Later on, when I got older I would borrow his camera and take pictures on my own. After high school I ended up going to college for animation and visual effects. This was my first real introduction to the movie industry. Shortly after college I ended up getting a job at a small production company in Illinois called Digital Alliance Media. This is when I started to experience the production side of film and media. I finally I ended up deciding to buy my first professional camera in 2021 and that is when I fully fell in love with photography and video production.
Would you say it’s been a smooth road, and if not what are some of the biggest challenges you’ve faced along the way?
So far, the road has not been very smooth for me. It all started after college when I decided to move to Atlanta in November of 2019. Unfortunately this was terrible timing and was followed by the Covid pandemic. I ended up having to move back in with my parents for a few years. When I was looking to move back to Atlanta I also had to worry about the writer and actor strike that brought the film industry to a halt delaying my move another year. I was finally able to move back to Atlanta last year and the film industry is still recovering after the strikes.
As you know, we’re big fans of you and your work. For our readers who might not be as familiar what can you tell them about what you do?
Personally, I love every aspect of photography, but my primary specialty is event photography and nature photography. I love trying to show the world the beauty of small plants that might normally be looked over in people’s everyday lives. A familiar hiking trail can become an unlimited source of inspiration. Georgia is beautiful all year round, it inspires you to explore more. Another part of photography I love is using older equipment in combination with newer methods and equipment. I buy vintage film lenses and attach them to my modern mirrorless camera to get unique results that emulate the old school film era of photography.
Any advice for finding a mentor or networking in general?
Unfortunately, I do not have any advice for finding a mentor since I’ve never really had one. The closest thing to a mentor I have had has been my father and a lot of what I have learned has either been from experience in the field or learning it off the internet such as YouTube and article I have read.
