Today we’d like to introduce you to Alexis Wolfe.
Hi Alexis, we’re thrilled to have a chance to learn your story today. So, before we get into specifics, maybe you can briefly walk us through how you got to where you are today?
I was born in Birmingham, AL but spent most of my life growing up in Atlanta. Atlanta made me a dreamer and made me believe I could accomplish any dream I had. There was a constant renaissance taking place every day and I didn’t wanna be left out of that. I have been writing poetry since elementary school but developed the candor of a winner after my high school teacher, Ms. Carney entered me into a scholarship and when I won, my creativity was set ablaze. I went to the military at 18, I was stationed at Fort Campbell, TN/KY and would often travel to Nashville for open mics where I came across the Soul Food Poetry Cafe founded by Ms. Imani Rhema. I was 19. I received a standing ovation and from then on, I acquired consistency.
My first poetry slam was Lipstick Wars founded by Rheonna Nicole, I won, and it set the tone for me as I began to compete in poetry slams. I found this inimitable poise in my craft at The PSV Store founded by Terrance Simpson. Wolfe was created by a combustion of events for sure! I’ve won awards, graced stages, snatched titles and became the 15th best woman poet in the world after competing in WOWPS with heiress Lady Brion. I take a backseat to this gift; I’ve seen what it does, I know what it can do and I’m not stopping.
I’m sure you wouldn’t say it’s been obstacle free, but so far would you say the journey have been a fairly smooth road?
Smooth road sounds like an oxymoron, hahaha. The challenges that I face trying to trail-blaze this path are not for the faint of heart. As a poet, there isn’t a mainstream presence in the industry so sometimes I feel reduced to a lesser role. There are times where I’m booked back to back and moments of not being booked at all. I’ve adopted Perseverance which propels me forward even when the road is rocky. There is no blueprint for what I’m trying to do with my gift. It’s been work, back to back, shows, photo shoots, events, late nights in the studio, no real sleep just naps. Also, I’m still in college! I’m in love with the process and I’m dedicated to seeing my dreams come to fruition so I’m in it to win it!
As you know, we’re big fans of you and your work. For our readers who might not be as familiar what can you tell them about what you do?
I’m a writer. I write poetry, movie/tv show script, songs, and books. I’m a spoken word artist which encompasses the art of performance.
I also specialize in curating social gatherings. I place special emphasis on cultivating safe and sacred spaces for women to heal past general and sexual trauma. Helping women to eradicate negative beliefs that affect their confidence with my poems and events is the thing that I’m most proud of. I’m most known for my bars in my poetry and my charming personality, hahaha. I’m really out here, this is why I stand out!
We all have a different way of looking at and defining success. How do you define success?
I define success by my impact being able to linger in my absence. When I’m not around, is something now different and better because of my contribution? That’s how I define success.
