Today we’d like to introduce you to April Showers.
Hi April, thanks for sharing your story with us. To start, maybe you can tell our readers some of your backstory.
I grew up in the inner city of Atlanta — the real Atlanta — on the West Side. From a young age, I had a deep love for my city. Moving from zone to zone, hood to hood, I didn’t just see Atlanta…I lived it. I watched its culture, energy, and people up close, and that shaped everything about who I am.
I’ve always been a leader, someone who thinks differently and moves with intention. My ideas have always come from a genuine place, rooted in the pride I have for where I’m from. That’s the same energy that brought the city together when I created the motto “I grew here, you flew here.” It wasn’t just a slogan — it was motivation. A reminder to bloom where we’re planted, to take pride in our roots, and to recognize the greatness that already exists within us.
My social status and presence in Atlanta didn’t come overnight — it came from over a decade of being truly myself, staying connected to the people, and showing love to the city that raised me. Everything I do is tied to my deep desire to represent Atlanta authentically and unapologetically. My story is simple: I’m a product of this city, and everything I am today started right here in the heart of the West Side.
Would you say it’s been a smooth road, and if not what are some of the biggest challenges you’ve faced along the way?
Has it been a smooth road? Not at all. My story is far from perfect, and honestly, most people would never guess the struggles I’ve pushed through. I grew up basically on my own — no solid parenting, no real foundation to fall back on. I lived from pillow to post with different relatives, doing my best to make a home wherever I landed. It was the typical hood story in many ways: a mother battling addiction, the absence of stability, and the weight of having to raise myself long before I was grown.
But here’s the part people don’t always expect — I never let any of that define me, break me, or turn me into a victim. What I went through could have taken me out mentally, spiritually, or physically, but it didn’t. God covered me in ways I didn’t even understand at the time. Looking back, I realize how protected I really was. Even growing up as a young girl in these Atlanta streets, I was never violated, never harmed, never consumed by the chaos around me. That wasn’t luck — that was God’s hand over my life.
So no, the road hasn’t been smooth. It’s been layered, heavy, and full of challenges that many will never know about. But every obstacle shaped me, strengthened me, and prepared me for the purpose I walk in today. And for that, I thank God every single day.
Thanks – so what else should our readers know about your work and what you’re currently focused on?
Today, I balance two worlds that both reflect who I am. Right after graduating high school, I stepped into the insurance industry, and that became my day-to-day career. I’m a licensed insurance agent, and I’ve built a solid professional foundation there. But beyond the office, I’m known all over Atlanta for something much deeper — my love for this city.
If I had to choose a specialty, it would be my ability to create, represent, and speak for Atlanta in a way that feels authentic. I’ve always had a natural connection to the culture, the people, and the heartbeat of the city. Over time, that turned into a reputation. Folks know me as someone who truly reps Atlanta — not for clout, not for attention, but because it’s who I am at my core.
One of the things I’m most proud of is being honored as the 2023 Atlanta Falcons Fan of the Year. That meant more to me than any trophy or title ever could. To be recognized by the team I’ve loved all my life — a team I’ve supported effortlessly, passionately, and loudly — was a moment that touched my soul. It felt like the city and the team looked back at me and said, “We see you.”
What sets me apart is my mindset. God blessed me with a creative, original way of thinking. The ideas I come up with are wild, unique, and all my own. A lot of people say they’re different, but I know for a fact that I am truly one of a kind. My passion is real, my energy is genuine, and everything I do comes straight from the heart — especially when it comes to my city.
Before we go, is there anything else you can share with us?
Absolutely. I want your readers to know that when you see me, you’re looking at REAL ATLANTA. Not the glossed-over version — but the authentic, raw, resilient side of this city. I’m a girl who came from all the “not-so-picture-perfect” parts of growing up, yet I stand today as a woman covered by God’s grace. My story is proof that your beginning doesn’t limit your becoming. If I can rise from where I started and still walk proudly in who I am, anybody can. And as long as I’m here, I’ll continue to represent Atlanta with the same love, honesty, and passion that raised me.
