Today we’d like to introduce you to Atlanta Zine Club.
Hi Atlanta Zine Club, thanks for joining us today. We’d love for you to start by introducing yourself.
AZC started with love for each other. Last year was a hard one for us and we got through a really difficult time together with creativity and friendship. We were making so many perzines. (vocab word! It means personal zine, as in it’s just about your life) We made one full of our most pained poetry called Atlanta Anachronism. And once the winter passed, we realized that we had alchemized this pain into something really awesome and decided we wanted to share it with our most wonderful city! So we decided to host an event open to everyone, a simple craft night like we had already had with friends a few times before. We were scrambling for a place to do it because too many people said they’d come for us to do it at Kim’s old place! But luckily Fall Line Press took notice of us and offered to share their space at The Goat Farm. (WE LOVE YOU FALL LINE GO BUY THEIR PHOTO BOOKS!) Since then, we’ve been having monthly events and started to build a really sweet community.
We all face challenges, but looking back would you describe it as a relatively smooth road?
Since we’ve been active, we’ve definitely been through periods of burnout. We took a little hiatus in the fall while we waded through the thick of it. But AZC really sustains our spirits in a big way, so we learned to keep it low-maintenance so that we can keep it running especially when things are difficult. We’ve learned to lean on the greater community when we need a hand. Mega shoutout our friends at JerkPress for being real zine demons.
Thanks – so what else should our readers know about your work and what you’re currently focused on?
Atlanta Zine Club exists to bring together and expand Atlanta’s zine community. We’re creating a space to share art, connect with other artists, and support local talent. Our focus is on accessibility and inclusivity—building a free public zine library, uplifting zines by queer and POC artists, and making sure everyone has a space to create. What we’re most proud of is how this has grown into something bigger than us—people coming together, collaborating, and building a lively zine scene in Atlanta.
Can you talk to us a bit about happiness and what makes you happy?
WE’RE HAPPY WHEN WE SEE OUR ZINESTERS HAPPY! It makes all of us happy to see people being weird and outspoken and seen and loved. We love our Atlanta community gathering, sharing interests, and daring to care enough to put their energy into art and advocacy. We love seeing our friends breathe life into their bodies and out onto paper, even though it’s so much easier to wither under the weight of the world. We love to get people to SEE EACH OTHER!!!!! Zines are all about getting your voice out there hard and fast. We can give that to each other in supporting the creation and reproduction of zines and by gathering to connect face to face through art.
