Today we’d like to introduce you to Ayo Weird.
Hi Ayo, it’s an honor to have you on the platform. Thanks for taking the time to share your story with us – to start maybe you can share some of your backstory with our readers?
I started off as a dancer for a career choice. Went to school for it after being forced to move to Kalamazoo, Michigan after an arrest that lead to me getting kicked out of the Philadelphia School District at age 11. After moving back to Philadelphia at age 17 and transferring my credits to west Philly high and graduating on honors, I transitioned to becoming a DJ while attending community college after a failed attempt at a Halloween party. After meeting so many artists and producers such as How We Drill rapper nuffsaid215 and multi-platinum producer maaly raw. It inspired me to take music more serious and dig deeper instead of just being a DJ for parties.
Would you say it’s been a smooth road, and if not what are some of the biggest challenges you’ve faced along the way?
No, it has not been a smooth road. I went through so much pain and suffering in my career. My close friends turned on me, I’ve been blacked-balled because I wouldn’t let some guy with a big name take advantage of me. I’ve been attacked at multiple events that left permanent scars and bruises and I have had my toes stepped on multiple times. But I rolled with the punches and kept it moving.
Thanks for sharing that. So, maybe next you can tell us a bit more about your work?
I’m a DJ/Producer. A lot of people mistake me as a rapper because I make songs here and there but that’s only for promotion used. How else am I going to promote my work. What sets me apart from others is I’m going to keep going even if I’m alone by myself. If you look on my YouTube pages ayo weird and socially awkward tv. All of those content is by me and only me by myself. I might have featured here and there, but they all backed by me and my own 2 hands.
Can you talk to us about how you think about risk?
The biggest risk I took was a show I was booked to perform at a venue called furnace 41 located in Jonesboro GA.
I didn’t have any fans to sell the tickets to and the minimum amount of tickets I had to sell was at least 20.
So what I did? I bought all 20 tickets myself and gave them out to whoever would show up.
The results was good until after the show when I got into a car accident that lead to my car catching on fire and blowing up in College Park GA.
Let me remind you I live in Pennsylvania.
Another risk I took lead me to meeting Ne-Yo and gaining a DJ tag. From him might add I had to spend 40.00 to get in that club and I also received a bunch of elbows to the face because of his crazy fans. WHITE PEOPLE REALLY LOVE THAT MAN. If racism does exist, it didn’t that day. But when he was leaving I asked managed to stop him at the exit and tell him. Hey, I’m a DJ, I’m a big fan of yours may I get a DJ Drop.
My DJ name is djweirdnasty but everyone calls me AYO WEIRD for short. And he did it on my phone. And took a pic with me. That right there was a great highlight in my career.
