Today we’d like to introduce you to Bai Huang.

Bai Huang

Hi Bai, please kick things off for us with an introduction to yourself and your story.
My childhood passion for anime led me to study animation at the Communication University of China. During my undergraduate studies, I specialized in 2D animation, but in my quest for continuous improvement, I decided to broaden my skills by transitioning to 3D animation upon arriving in the United States. I pursued my dream at the Savannah College of Art and Design in the U.S., specializing in 3D animation. Today, as an animator in Los Angeles, my commitment lies in infusing emotion and creativity into my work, with the aim of bringing joy and contemplation to audiences.

I’m sure it wasn’t obstacle-free, but would you say the journey has been fairly smooth so far?
My journey into animation has been like a whirlwind romance with a few unexpected plot twists. So, picture this: I started out head over heels in love with anime. Naturally, I thought diving into animation was the way to go, so I majored in it during undergrad. But hold up, reality check – animation and anime? I wouldn’t say that they are mountains and seas, but they definitely have a huge difference.

Surprisingly, though, it turned out to be the best accident. Since most of the anime I watched as a child were 2D animation, it was natural for me to major in 2D animation. But after graduating, and especially after interning at an animation studio in China, I realized I had only scratched the surface. Cue the “I need to know more” moment. Hey, why not turn it into an adventure? I have always dreamed of stepping out of my comfort zone and seeing what the world has to offer.

So, I came to Savannah College of Art and Design ready to start a new chapter. But this time, I changed my approach – from 2D to 3D. Talk about a genre shift! My 2D background was like the perfect prequel, setting the stage for my entry into the world of 3D animation. Note that this is not without challenges. It felt a bit like learning a new language, but my knowledge of 2D animation skills made the journey a little bit smoother. I would also say – Like rosemary to a steak, my 2D animation skills add flavor to my 3D animation work.

After graduation, I became a professional 3D animator. The journey may not be easy, but every bump in the road is ultimately a plot twist that shapes my story. From anime enthusiasts to 2D enthusiasts, to full-fledged 3D professionals – who saw this coming?

Can you tell our readers more about what you do and what you think sets you apart from others?
Alright, so I’m your go-to animator, juggling both 2D and 3D stuff. But hey, it’s not all work and no play. I’ve got this drawing hobby on the side—it’s my therapy. Drawing helps me with my aesthesic and staging for animation. What sets me apart? Well, I’m the kinda animator who isn’t afraid to get creative and push some boundaries. Every project is a chance to step out of my comfort zone. I prefer adventures rather than settling. Gotta keep things fresh and interesting.

What really gets me going is being a perpetual self-challenger. I never let myself settle into a cozy routine. It’s all about experimenting, trying new things, and refusing to stay stagnant. Plus, being an Asian artist, my cultural background is like the secret sauce in my work. It adds that extra flavor; you feel me? My animations are this unique blend of technical wizardry, creative vibes, and a global perspective.

Now, my main focus? I’m deep into the world of 3D character animation. Bringing characters to life is an absolute blast. There’s this indescribable joy when my animations bring a smile or inspire someone. It’s not just about moving pixels; it’s about creating moments that resonate with people. So, if you’re looking for an animator who’s all about the thrill of pushing boundaries and injecting life into characters, you’ve found your match!

Before we let you go, we’ve got to ask if you have any advice for those who are just starting out?
For those embarking on the exciting yet challenging journey of a career, my foremost advice is to always stay humble. In a world that constantly evolves and presents new opportunities, humility becomes the compass that guides your growth. Acknowledge that there is always room for improvement and learning, regardless of your level of expertise. This is what one of my professors said to me, and I share it with you who are reading this paragraph. I am still getting benefits from it.

Embrace courage. Consider every challenge as a step forward, and don’t hesitate to seek advice from those who have trodden a similar path. Reach out for assistance, even if you’re unfamiliar with the person. In my school days, I frequently took the initiative to engage in discussions with talented artists. Through these conversations, I gained valuable insights and learned a great deal.

I would like to express my heartfelt thanks to VoyageATL for the interview opportunity. I appreciate your efforts in bringing my work to a wider audience.
