Today we’d like to introduce you to Brandi Turner.
Hi Brandi, thanks for sharing your story with us. To start, maybe you can tell our readers some of your backstory.
I moved to Atlanta from Birmingham back in the Fall of 2015. Every time I met young black professionals out and about, I noticed they all had an ‘AND’ attached to their names. Everyone had many passions and many hustles. I wanted to be like that. I’m an Educator by day, but I wanted more. I wanted more to talk about. I wanted another way to connect and network with people. So one day, while driving home in Atlanta traffic, I decided to write a book. The title would be “F*ck Boy Fables,” a collection of short stories telling of my dating escapades. I self-published the book. I formatted it and designed the cover. It seemed like every time I got to a new part of the process, a door would open, and there would be someone there to assist or lend advice. The book was released in the Fall of 2017. I finally had my ‘AND.’ I am an educator AND a self-published author.
I would sell my book out of my purse in bars and restaurants and go to pop-up shop events on the weekends. Soon people wanted advice on how they could self-publish as well. I helped someone self-publish their book just a few months after I had released “F*ck Boy Fables.” That process brought just as much joy as writing my own book had done.
There is so much information out there, and navigating the self-publishing process can be overwhelming. That’s where I come in. Brandi Turner Enterprises, LLC provides a personal experience. I am with my clients every step of the process. My business has been completely referral based, so my clients feel connected to the person helping them achieve their goals. I’ve helped publish journals, children’s books, art collections, poetry, memoirs, etc. I love hearing the relief in my client’s voices when they realize that publishing a book is within their reach. My favorite part of the journey is receiving a signed copy of their book in the mail. I have assisted with over 40 projects in the past 5 years, and I pray I continue to get the opportunity to be of service.
Coincidently, not only am I an author ‘AND’ self-publishing consultant, but my full-time job is as a Library Media Specialist at an elementary school. I read books to children by day and help future authors by night. God has truly aligned my life, and I feel blessed for it.
Alright, so let’s dig a little deeper into the story – has it been an easy path overall and if not, what were the challenges you’ve had to overcome?
The road has been very smooth. I treat my clients with respect, and I value their time. I handle their project with as much care as I would my own. Just when I think I won’t have another client for all, all of a sudden, I get another chance to help a future author.
As you know, we’re big fans of you and your work. For our readers who might not be as familiar what can you tell them about what you do?
I am a Library Media Specialist at an elementary school here in Atlanta. I am probably most proud of getting my Doctoral degree in Education. Believe it or not, the years I have spent formatting books, editing, and writing made writing a dissertation easy. I’m still amazed at how things align sometimes.
Any big plans?
Whenever I am asked about my future plans, I have no clue what to say. I am unsure of what the future holds. I do hope to be still assisting future authors and maybe write another book.
