Today we’d like to introduce you to Brendon Garrett.
Hi Brendon, thanks for joining us today. We’d love for you to start by introducing yourself.
Born and raised in Buffalo, NY, from a family of 4. I was the odd one of them all. Being the youngest didn’t help that scenario either. Always talk down to no matter how good I did at anything. Living on east side of buffalo majority of my life was a struggle. Attending recently shut down school Westminster community Charter school from 2nd grade to graduation in 2013, I held a lot of talent but was always overlooked because of not wanting to follow what others did. Many of my elders would always tell me “I aspire something different”. I always had a raw talent to draw very detailed art at very young age.
My inspiration would run wild if I saw certain abstracts, graffiti, certain video games, street art, museums, ect anything you can think of that was unique in its own way. Depression took a major toll most of my life.
Listening to music was my major safe haven. Putting my thoughts and art on paper was the other. But what more could one have done than to put it on paper as a piece. That is until I got in introduced to the “computer” and “internet” where I developed the passion for “computer animation” and joined a website called “Deviant art” which my account is still active to this day (XUltimate-AnimationX). Early 80s – 90s video games where my biggest inspirations. That page explains it all. Sadly, I lost the passion to continue digital art when real life hit in high school. I attended “Health Sciences Charter school “ all 4 years.
It was surely a game changer when time grew thin for hobbies while real life was taking over. But before I disbanded from the digital world, I saved all my files of animation art and music in a 8g flash drive that I kept possession of for over a decade. 4 years of high school was not the best years but I made it through. I lost many friends and family during those times. Times where tough..so tough I wanted to give up on life. One thing is, I always had the mentality to never give up. After high school, college starts and my passion from digital art went to what I like to call “Physical art” aka “Dancing”. The passion to dance first came from my father who was mildly known dancer in the 80s to early 2000s. He mainly did “ capoeira “. He was also a “house” dancer. He was the one who taught many people to dance in Buffalo and even brought capoeira to the city.
Throughout my life specifically ages 9-13 I developed a foundation of “bboy” aka “breakdancing” which is another style my father displayed back then.
Dancing was already a gift in the blood. I learned African dance foundation in the 2017 “ Unapologetically Black Jack & Jill Buffalo Chapter – 2017 Beautillion “ the year I started college. Dance inspiration started to pick up more frequently. I was introduced to the “Les twins” which skyrocketed my skill of dance. I wanted to dance just like them and for straight 2 years I studied their style which was “new style hip hop “. Things were looking good with dance but I was still underdeveloped. I would keep them on a blasting for unrecommended periods of time to cope with stress or any depression. Dancing on my down time. Fixing my craft. I started going out into the party life late 2017 – 2018 as any first attended college student would. It was definitely worth the experience. I learned club setting is the best to display my dance craft.
This all lasted until the end of 2018 where I moved to Georgia. Moving down here was the best thing to do for my path in life as a multi-artist. Mainly “dance” because this is the city of inspiration, literally. My craft of dancing changed as I met different people from around the globe with different foundation. I joined “Mad house (2018-2020) “ which I met my official first dance mates who were definitely supportive but would criticize me rough only to make me the best version of myself. I was nicknamed “akuma “ by the group because of the large beads I would wear around my neck. They were my first official brothers. In a span of one year of being in Atl, I sky rocketed from 3000 followers to 10k followers on IG. It all happened so fast. I attended major events, met even more people, and began to network.
My style was still underdeveloped. There where still times I wasn’t good enough. Practice makes perfect though. Year 2020 comes I develop in to my unique style of “animation” and “krump” and started traveling. I renamed to “BEATZ (the dancer)” the main inspiration for that is my love for instrumental music and blasting music in my ears all the time in headphones. Mainly “Drill” music. Another part reason for the name was the game “Jet set radio future”, the character named “Beat” was my favorite in the game. 2020 was the year I officially was certified as a new gen in the dance community. “BEATZ” who grown more and more on people. Fast forward to 2021, my friends call me beatz instead of my real name. I also put people on to exclusive tracks from low profile artist. More doors starting opening for me.
I started getting paid for my dance craft which is the best feeling to get paid for what you love to do. I met a lot of celebrities in the process. Everything I always prayed for everyday happened. All the talent came to use. I didn’t care what anyone said when it came to my dreams. One person I do want to thank is my best friend Marcellus Palmer (@impakpalmer8 – @impakvisuals) Dancer and videographer for helping with my dance craft to this present day and being one of the reasons we are making it today. And for anyone out there who can be in the worst predicaments and situations and think they can’t make it, you’re going to have hardships no doubt, block out the negativity. Believe in yourself because we are ALL gifted, especially as black people.
Alright, so let’s dig a little deeper into the story – has it been an easy path overall and if not, what were the challenges you’ve had to overcome?
There been bumps in the road with people treating you certain way because you’re to stylish or just a dope person everyone likes. I always block out the haters and negativity. Smiling through everything.
Thanks for sharing that. So, maybe next you can tell us a bit more about your work?
I’m a dancer who specializes in entertainment business. I’m known for being smooth with my feet on concrete. You might see me on Atlanta roads, medians, music videos, everywhere tbh. Buffalo or NYC as well. One thing’s for sure I’m proud of how far I came and how developed I am as a dancer and a person. I follow no one but my own. I like being a leader.
Who else deserves credit in your story?
The people I want to thank for where I am today is my father and my best friend Marcellus Palmer. Those 2 are also dancers. They gave me reality more than anyone on this planet. They are the realest people I know. Without the real people are blind.
