Check Out Catelyn Whaley’s Story

Today we’d like to introduce you to Catelyn Whaley.

Hi Catelyn, we’d love for you to start by introducing yourself.
So I first picked up a camera about nine years ago when I was 14. I just used my dad’s little point-and-shoot, it wasn’t just plain photography I was getting into I was more interested in the photoshop photo manipulation- like making two of me or making myself levitate. It wasn’t until I started asking strangers to model for me that I got into the cinematic portraiture side of photography. I stuck with that for a while then when I got in my 20’s I was more eager to shoot couples- probably because I was as single as you could get and was living through them- I also had no idea how to pose two people in love and I loved that challenge. Now I love to document all the details of any big life event, from graduating to having a baby or getting married.

Would you say it’s been a smooth road, and if not what are some of the biggest challenges you’ve faced along the way?
Definitely not, I started it so young that sometimes I feel like I struggle with liking the art I create or just feeling a loss of passion or that it is less of a challenge – which is what I love. But at times I feel creatively drained I create with some art friends and it helps.

Thanks – so what else should our readers know about your work and what you’re currently focused on?
I strive to connect with people to help them through a process or to document it. I love hearing people’s stories and beliefs, how they came to be who they are today. I want the photos I create to be authentic in the moment much like a film photo.

Do you have any advice for those looking to network or find a mentor?
There is something to learn from everyone, good and bad shoot often find things to shoot that are a challenge, don’t waste your time with people who look down on you.
