Today we’d like to introduce you to Charlene Autumn.
Alright, so thank you so much for sharing your story and insight with our readers. To kick things off, can you tell us a bit about how you got started?
I started doing makeup at eight years old. I was so fascinated watching my mom apply the iconic MAC studio fix powder. Although I couldn’t use those products at the time, that didn’t stop me from using baby powder! This is when the innovative Charlene was born. When I got to middle school one of my close friends, Jailine, bought me my first makeup palette from Claire’s and the rest was history. I always joke and say my friends made me into a makeup artist because they’d always ask me to do their eyeshadow every day; and then it expanded to their brows next. As time went on, I fell in love with the ability to enhance women’s beauty with my gift. Seeing people’s reactions, their smiles, excitement, and confidence after I do their makeup is what makes it so fulfilling for me.
Can you talk to us a bit about the challenges and lessons you’ve learned along the way. Looking back would you say it’s been easy or smooth in retrospect?
Becoming a makeup artist hasn’t been a smooth road, but it hasn’t been too bumpy either. At the beginning of my journey, experiencing many different clients from different ethnic backgrounds was a challenge for me; I was not yet experienced in coloring matching. My close knit-clientele consisting of family and friends would provide the foundation and concealer needed for the service. When I started expanding my brand and my clientele began to grow, I had to learn, master, and understand the principles of undertones and color theory. I learned the hard way that a yellow-based foundation will leave an orange cast on someone with a red undertone. Fortunately, I took every experience as a learning opportunity allowing me to grow into my full potential. It was important for me to learn how to communicate respectfully, efficiently and professionally to all my clients. Also, writing my goals down and completing them one after another has helped build structure and build my confidence and belief in myself. I finally grew to understand that everything that is meant to happen will and has come into my life gracefully, if it didn’t happen, it wasn’t meant to.
Alright, so let’s switch gears a bit and talk business. What should we know about your work?
I specialize in bridal, editorial, fashion, print, glam, teaching and tv & film makeup. My artistry and credentials set me apart from everyone else. I don’t only focus on what’s trendy and cool, I listen to my clients and what they want achieved in every service. I am in the process of becoming a licensed master cosmetologist in order to expand my skill set and take on a more extensive clientele. I am always looking for ways to grow, improve, and provide better service. I am most proud of my versatility and willingness to learn new things! One thing I’ve learned is that the beauty industry is always evolving, so it’s important for me to stay on top of all the newest trends!
How do you define success?
Success for me means being rich in all aspects of my life. Rich in my faith (God), rich in peace, rich relationships, rich financially, and richness as a whole.
