Today we’d like to introduce you to Chavon Parker
Hi Chavon, it’s an honor to have you on the platform. Thanks for taking the time to share your story with us – to start maybe you can share some of your backstory with our readers?
My name is Chavon Parker, though most know me as Voni P. I’m a country girl from Stony Creek, Virginia, and my journey into fashion styling feels like it was always meant to be. Growing up, I was surrounded by strong, stylish women—my mom, my grandma, and my aunties, who always had an eye for detail and knew how to express themselves through fashion. That influence was ingrained in me early on. I can remember wearing my grandma and mom’s vintage gold necklaces and rings with my outfits, layering them with confidence—always embracing a maximalist approach to style. I loved how those pieces added personality and richness to whatever I wore.
In high school, I started experimenting with fashion in my own way. I’d distress jeans and bleach them for my friends, and I even began offering these customizations for a little extra money. It was a mix of creativity and entrepreneurship that I really enjoyed. I loved experimenting with my wardrobe, often throwing together unexpected pieces to create outfits that felt unique to me. I guess you could say I was a fashionista in the making, long before I even fully understood what that meant!
One of my favorite things to do during my high school years was thrifting. I loved hunting for hidden gems and finding unique, vintage pieces that no one else had. It became a way for me to express my creativity and develop my own style without following trends. Thrifting was like a treasure hunt, and I felt a sense of pride in reimagining old clothes into something fresh and exciting.
Styling my friends’ and family outfits became a hobby that soon turned into a passion. I loved helping them express their personalities and confidence through what they wore. That’s when I realized styling wasn’t just about clothes, it was about creating a feeling, a moment. From there, I started building a portfolio by networking, assisting designers at shoots, creating fashion boards on my styling page, etc. Over time, the work grew more serious, and I started developing my own style and voice as a stylist.
Along the way, I’ve remained humble. I know how far I’ve come, but I also recognize that none of this would be possible without God’s guidance. I truly believe that with Him, anything is possible. Faith has been my anchor throughout this journey, and it’s helped me stay grounded while pursuing my dreams. The journey has had its ups and downs, but every step has been an opportunity to learn, refine my skills, and build relationships. Today, I’m fortunate to work with amazing clients and brands, but I never forget how it all started: with the inspiration I got from the women around me and the small projects I took on early in life. Fashion for me is always evolving, and I’m excited to keep pushing boundaries and telling stories through the art of styling.
We all face challenges, but looking back would you describe it as a relatively smooth road?
The road hasn’t always been smooth, but every challenge has been a valuable part of my journey. One of the struggles I’ve faced is balancing the demand for my styling services with the reality of making sure the work is properly valued. There are times when I get a lot of inquiries and people are eager to work with me, but when it comes to compensation, many are reluctant to pay my standard rates or ask for discounts. This can be tough, especially when you’re starting out and trying to establish your worth in the industry.
Another challenge I’ve encountered is the difficulty in getting proper documentation of my work. I’ve had clients tell me they received a lot of compliments on the looks I styled for them, but when it comes time to showcase those looks in photos for my portfolio, sometimes the photos never materialize. It’s frustrating because showcasing the work is crucial for growth and attracting new clients, but I’ve learned to be resourceful and find other ways to document my work when necessary.
Despite these challenges, I’ve never let them deter me. They’ve only made me more determined to continue pushing forward, refining my craft, and ensuring that my work is always treated with the respect it deserves. The road may not always be easy, but it’s taught me the importance of perseverance, professionalism, and setting boundaries. Every step whether smooth or rocky—has brought me closer to the stylist and person I aspire to be. At the end of the day, I’m grateful for the journey because it has shaped me, and it has made every success, even if it’s small, feel rewarding.
Alright, so let’s switch gears a bit and talk business. What should we know about your work?
For almost two years, I’ve had the privilege of working as a counselor for traumatized youth, specifically ages 11 to 17. This role has been incredibly rewarding, as it allows me to guide and support young people who are navigating some of the toughest moments in their lives. Prior to that, I worked in a school setting, where I gained valuable experience in understanding the unique needs of children and young adults. Before entering the counseling field, I spent five years in retail management, where I honed my leadership skills, learned the importance of organization, and developed a deep understanding of customer service—skills I now bring into my work with youth and clients alike.
Alongside my work in counseling, my passion for fashion has always been a significant part of who I am. I’ve always believed that fashion isn’t just about clothes; it’s about confidence, self-expression, and empowerment. I specialize in styling that focuses on helping individuals feel their best, no matter their background or body type. Whether it’s curating an outfit for a photoshoot, a special event, or simply everyday wear, I focus on tailoring looks that reflect each person’s unique personality and story. I’m most known for bringing an eclectic, sometimes maximalist approach to styling, mixing bold colors, textures, and vintage pieces to create something fresh and eye-catching.
I’d say I’m most proud of being a positive role model and a trusted friend to my tribe—whether it’s the young people I’ve mentored or the close circle of friends I have. In both fashion and life, I aim to lead by example and inspire others to be their authentic selves. I’m especially proud of the work I’ve done with the kids I’ve worked with, helping them build self-confidence through their clothing and expression, as well as offering guidance and support in their personal lives.
What sets me apart is my ability to merge my experience in counseling and fashion to help people feel good on the inside and out. I believe that feeling confident in what you wear can have a profound impact on how you carry yourself and approach life. Whether I’m offering emotional support or styling someone for a new chapter, I approach both roles with the same core values: empathy, authenticity, and empowerment.
Do you have any advice for those looking to network or find a mentor?
Finding a mentor is valuable, and I absolutely think it’s important to seek guidance, but I’ve always preferred to do things my own way. It’s not that I think I have it all figured out or that I’m trying to be selfish, but I don’t like the idea of just mirroring someone else’s journey. I believe in learning from others, but I’m very intentional about staying true to my own voice and path.
Networking can be a challenge, especially because I’m more of a behind-the-scenes person. I’ve always struggled a bit with putting myself out there…like, I’m shy, but I’m not. I’ve always preferred figuring things out on my own rather than following the crowd. But over time, I’ve realized that pushing myself to connect with others is crucial for growth.
What’s worked well for me is simply being genuine and building relationships over time. I believe mentorship comes naturally when there’s mutual respect and authenticity. It’s not about forcing connections but about creating real bonds with people whose work you admire, whether that’s through social media, events, or shared interests. I also think mentorship doesn’t have to come from just one person, it’s about gathering wisdom and guidance from a network of people who support you in different ways.
When it comes to networking, I stay true to myself. I approach things in a way that aligns with my values and instincts. I’ve always made it a point to carve my own path and trust my intuition, even when it means not following trends or the usual route.
Networking for me has always been about quality over quantity. Rather than trying to connect with everyone, I focus on forming meaningful, long-term relationships. I also make it a point to give back to others—whether it’s sharing my knowledge, offering support, or just being a good listener. I’ve found that genuine connections are built on these kinds of exchanges.
Even though it’s been a stretch for me to put myself out there more, I’ve learned that the rewards are worth it. You never know who might offer valuable advice or open doors for you. It’s not always easy, but the more I push myself, the more opportunities arise
