Today we’d like to introduce you to Clement Romain.
Alright, so thank you so much for sharing your story and insight with our readers. To kick things off, can you tell us a bit about how you got started?
I was introduced to comic books as a child when my mother came from overseas and gave me a Captain America comic. Prior to that I’d always love to draw and color. But my soul was elated when she gave me that comic. I copied every page, including the commercials.
When I moved to United States I really became infatuated with comics and started to collect them. This really influenced and improved my art. I made my own comics eventually with the limited resources available to me. I had decided what I wanted to be when I grew up.
I would eventually move to Atlanta to attend Art Institute of Atlanta where I learned digital art and some graphic design. I failed at my first attempt to be an entrepreneur as an artist and it made me really depressed. So much so that I did no art for a few years.
I had a daughter, and she loved spending time drawing and coloring with me. One day she found my old sketch books and was amazed. She said ” this is what you need to do daddy, draw!!” It had been almost seven years since I’d really taken my art seriously. But she was persistent. When I would come home from work she’d want me to draw. I was reluctant at first, but I eventually surrendered to my passion once again. This time I promised myself I would never stop again.
I stumbled upon a Facebook group for comic book lovers where I made some friends. We all had similar stories and had a mutual desire to make comics. We decided to combine our efforts and form Fantasy Art Comics which was started by brothers Raymond and Anthony Sanders. We are seven members strong now, writers, artists and designers in different states.
We form an assembly line format to produce six titles.
We also acquired our first studio Located at Lowe Mill Art Center in Huntsville Alabama.
I branched out and now work out of my studio Fantasy Art Studios Atlanta and will hopefully start producing some of my own titles.
Would you say it’s been a smooth road, and if not what are some of the biggest challenges you’ve faced along the way?
It has not been a smooth road. The art business is brutal and is not for the weak. You are your worst critic. Rejection is a common thing and you must have skin like a rhino.
Appreciate you sharing that. What else should we know about what you do?
Well while my passion is mostly for comic book illustration, I also love doing Logos. Besides publishing comics one of my biggest accomplishments is designing the logo for radio station 93.9 Powerhitz.
What are your plans for the future?
I plan to continue to work on putting out issues of comics. I also haven plans to do more traditional art and even try my hand at doing some art shows
