Today we’d like to introduce you to David Watkins.
Hi David, we’d love for you to start by introducing yourself.
My journey with photography began in Roanoke, Virginia. I got my first camera around the age of 11 or 12. I wanted to be an actor and create skits. However, I was very insecure and didn’t like seeing myself on camera. Instead, I photographed two of my friends for their Myspace accounts and occasionally took my camera to school and recorded candid moments.
My passion for acting and filmmaking never died but I did put the camera down for a while until I watched Beyonce’s Lemonade visual and it was so beautiful and inspiring. So, in 2017 I purchased my first DSLR to create a short film, sadly it didn’t happen. So, I focused on photography instead and now here I am, putting my all into photography.
Alright, so let’s dig a little deeper into the story – has it been an easy path overall and if not, what were the challenges you’ve had to overcome?
The journey hasn’t been smooth as I thought it would be. I was living in Los Angeles for three years before moving to Atlanta and trying to be a photographer there was very intimidating. Those photographers are super talented and very professional. So, the biggest challenge I faced was always comparing my work to others and not feeling good enough.
Now, I’m a lot more confident and have learned so much since then. I definitely will give Los Angeles another shot in the future.
Alright, so let’s switch gears a bit and talk business. What should we know about your work?
Honestly, I’m still finding my niche. I love creative portraits and maternity. Eventually, I would like to do editorial/high fashion, concerts and graphic design work.
What I am most proud of is me not letting my camera just sit there. I dedicated 2022 to photography and I’ve been busy every weekend! Secondly, I’m proud of myself for investing in education, from meet ups with other creatives and online classes to learn the business side of photography. Finally, my last proud moment is becoming a Getty Image Contributor.
Before we let you go, we’ve got to ask if you have any advice for those who are just starting out?
My advice to anyone that is just starting out is to find fellow creatives to collaborate with and learn from. Invest in your education, master your first camera before upgrading and lastly, have fun with it!
Things I wish I would’ve known are, it’s not easy at all. It’s so much more than just pressing a button and that it’s really expensive!! haha
