Today we’d like to introduce you to Destiny Fleming.
Hi Destiny, it’s an honor to have you on the platform. Thanks for taking the time to share your story with us – to start maybe you can share some of your backstory with our readers?
The Destined for Greatness Scholarship Fund started in the summer of 2019 at about 3am. I had received a brand new laptop as a part of making it to the second round of a scholarship (I didn’t end up winning the final round). At that time, the laptop was collecting dust in my room for about a year. I figured I’d create a laptop giveaway and gift the computer to a college student in need. What I thought would be an easy giveaway quickly turned into a stressful time of deciding who needed the computer more. I was only a rising sophomore in college myself, so I couldn’t afford to buy a new computer for a second student. So instead, I came up with care packages! Every student needs them. Whether it be toiletries, snacks, or dorm decor, it would come in handy.
We all face challenges, but looking back would you describe it as a relatively smooth road?
Things haven’t always been smooth. The hardest part each year is only deciding on 1 person to give a brand new laptop to. I would often cry as I read over some of the applications. When the pandemic hit, I didn’t know if I’d be able to buy a laptop for a student, but the donations came pouring in and the weight had lifted off of my shoulders. In another way, I sometimes struggled with receiving applications. This year, I’ve only had three students apply so sometimes I get a bit discouraged.
As you know, we’re big fans of you and your work. For our readers who might not be as familiar what can you tell them about what you do?
During the ten months, I’m not reviewing applications, I’m stepping foot into the adult life as I’ve recently received my BA in Business Administration from Clark Atlanta University. In my downtime, I specialize in giving back to my community through scholarship mentoring. As someone who graduated debt-free, I like sharing my keys to success with younger high school and college students. Overall, I’m most proud of my determination and grit. Even when I fail, I give myself grace and get right back up to try again. Every dream that I’ve had, I’ve made come true in one way or another.
What matters most to you? Why?
When I think about what matter’s to me most, I can never actually pinpoint just 1 thing. But if I had to choose, it would be peace. Peace for myself and peace during my interactions with others. I strive to live a life where I’m content with each of my choices and their outcomes. Peace within myself means that whenever I encounter circumstances outside of my control, I’m able to look inside myself and remember my own purpose. And it’s to make myself proud.
