Today we’d like to introduce you to Devika Kundu.
Hi Devika, thanks for joining us today. We’d love for you to start by introducing yourself.
A few years back, I found myself in a pivotal moment during one of my favorite lectures when my professor posed a question that echoed in my mind long after the class ended: “Creative solutions to real-world problems.” It was like a lightning bolt of inspiration struck me, illuminating my path toward the world of design. While designers have long been known for enhancing the aesthetics and functionality of products, I realized that the realm of design was evolving, with practitioners now using their skills to tackle complex, real-world challenges head-on.
My journey as a visual designer began amidst the vibrant tapestry of India, a country renowned for its kaleidoscope of cultures, languages, and traditions. Growing up surrounded by this rich diversity nurtured my innate sense of artistry, shaping my worldview and fueling my passion for creativity. While some may assume that my path to design was a gradual one, the truth is far more exhilarating—it was a spontaneous leap of faith that transformed my life.
During my undergraduate years at MIT ADT University in Pune, India, I delved into the expansive world of graphic design—a journey that exposed me to a myriad of disciplines, from branding and advertising to interaction design and sustainability. Immersed in the hustle and bustle of internships and real-world projects, I honed my skills and forged invaluable connections in the industry. Landing my first full-time role at Ogilvy was a dream come true, where I had the opportunity to unleash my creativity and breathe life into countless campaigns for diverse brands.
As David Ogilvy famously said, “Big ideas are usually simple ideas.”
This mantra has become my guiding light, propelling me to push boundaries and strive for simplicity and impact in every design endeavor. Yet, my thirst for knowledge and a deeper understanding of human-centered design propelled me across the globe to pursue my master’s at the Savannah College of Art and Design in Atlanta, Georgia.
The past year has been a whirlwind of learning, growth, and adventure—a journey that has not only expanded my skills but also broadened my horizons. From immersive studio sessions to cross-cultural exchanges, every moment has been a stepping stone towards my ultimate goal: to emerge as a multi-disciplinary designer who crafts designs that not only captivate but also inspire and evoke smiles.
Now, as I stand on the cusp of graduation, I am filled with excitement and anticipation for the road ahead. Armed with a newfound perspective and a relentless drive to make a difference, I am ready to unleash my creativity and leave my mark on the world—one design at a time.
Can you talk to us about the challenges and lessons you’ve learned? Looking back, would you say it’s been easy or smooth in retrospect?
While my journey in the world of design has been incredibly rewarding, it hasn’t been without its share of challenges. Like any creative pursuit, there were moments when I encountered roadblocks that tested my resolve and pushed me to my limits.
One of the biggest struggles I faced was navigating the transition from the structured world of academia to the fast-paced, ever-evolving landscape of professional design. It was a daunting leap, filled with uncertainty and self-doubt. Additionally, balancing multiple internships, coursework, and personal projects required meticulous time management and unwavering dedication.
Another significant hurdle was learning to cope with failure and rejection—a common experience for anyone striving for excellence in a competitive industry. Whether it was a rejected design pitch or a project that didn’t meet expectations, each setback served as a valuable lesson in resilience and perseverance. Moreover, as I ventured into new territories like human-centered design during my master’s program, I encountered unfamiliar challenges that demanded a steep learning curve and a willingness to embrace discomfort.
However, it’s often in these moments of struggle that we discover our true strength and resilience. Each setback became an opportunity for growth, pushing me to innovate, adapt, and ultimately emerge stronger than before. Moreover, having a supportive network of mentors, peers, and loved ones who believed in my potential was instrumental in navigating these challenges with grace and determination.
In hindsight, I’ve come to appreciate that the bumps along the road are an integral part of the journey—they shape us, mold us, and ultimately propel us toward our fullest potential. And while the path may not have been smooth, looking back – I wouldn’t have it any other way!

Can you share something surprising about yourself?
During my time at Savannah College of Art and Design, I had the unexpected opportunity to teach a weeklong workshop on graphic design to high school students. It was a whirlwind of excitement as I guided them through the creative process of poster design and shared my knowledge with budding designers.
What surprised me most was how much I learned from the experience. Teaching forced me to articulate design concepts in new ways, deepening my understanding of the subject. It also ignited a passion for mentoring that I didn’t know I had. This unexpected foray into teaching not only broadened my perspective but also transformed my perception of my capabilities.
While I had never envisioned myself in a teaching role, this experience proved to be a catalyst for personal and professional growth, equipping me with invaluable skills and insights that I can carry forward into my future endeavors in the industry.
