Today we’d like to introduce you to Dexter Summerlin.
Hi Dexter, we’d love for you to start by introducing yourself.
As far back as I can remember Ive always wanted to be a dentist. The true turning point happened I was 6 yrs of age. Skate boarding with some friends and falling off chipping my two front teeth. Being terrified about what had happened, my family and I drove down the shore ( In New Jersey) to my uncles dental office. While in the office to get my treatment done, I remember being nervous and scared. My uncle ( Dr. Michael Brantley) placed me under Nitrous oxide and all i remember was bowling with monkeys in space and coming to with both of the fractured teeth removed and I having not felt or feeling any pain. It was at that moment I knew I wanted to be like my Uncle Mike..
I’m sure it wasn’t obstacle-free, but would you say the journey has been fairly smooth so far?
not too many struggles, just took a 7 year break from graduating undergrad to get to dental school. Graduated w/ a degree in Psychology. Went back to school at night while working several jobs to finish all pre-requisites for dental school. Then did a post bachelorette program called Med Path ( program for pre med, pre dent, pre-vet etc) students to complete 1 yr of graduate school training while maintaining a 3.0GPA during the program. Once completed successful completion of the program, you get accepted to dental school the following year
Thanks for sharing that. So, maybe next you can tell us a bit more about your work?
