Today we’d like to introduce you to Dj Kaxkes.
Hi Dj Kaxkes, we’d love for you to start by introducing yourself.
I am a young black female dj from Union Springs, AL. I am known for the slogan “I’ma Twerk But Don’t Touch Me”. I became interested in djing from being a server at Yubar (late 2019), and I became really fond of watching two djs, (Dj Boosie & Dj Who) dj. I used to tell them I’m going to start djing; but I was merely joking. Around the time covid-19 came upon us in 2020, I became depressed, then the world closed completely down which made it worse because there was nothing to do. I said to myself, I’m going to purchase some equipment because I need to find something to channel this energy into. Long story short, I bought some equipment, begin learning a few techniques on my own, then once everything opened back up, I shadowed some djs until they basically took the life jacket off & threw me out there on my own, lol.
Can you talk to us a bit about the challenges and lessons you’ve learned along the way. Looking back would you say it’s been easy or smooth in retrospect?
No, it has not. I’ve been told that this is a man’s job, & women shouldn’t do this. Being a woman in entertainment is very challenging mentally, especially constantly dealing with misogyny & sexualization.
Thanks – so what else should our readers know about your work and what you’re currently focused on?
I am most proud of actually accomplishing a goal that I set out for myself and actually showing those who said I couldn’t, that I can. I also dropped my very first all-female mixtape GNO (Girls Night Out) dedicated for women; by three women (Dj Gorgeous, Dj KB, and myself) during Women’s History Month. I’m currently focusing on GNO Volume 2, breaking records, and getting good music out to the world making sure unheard talents are heard.
Do you have any advice for those looking to network or find a mentor?
I always apply myself, no matter where I am or who I’m with. I think to myself, the worst thing that can happen is someone saying no, ignoring me, or rolling the window up in my face (it has happened, lol), & none of that scares me. If that door is meant for me, it will open without me having to break character. Philippians 4:6-7 is what keeps me hopeful.
