Today we’d like to introduce you to Dominique Kennedy.
Hi Dominique, it’s an honor to have you on the platform. Thanks for taking the time to share your story with us – to start maybe you can share some of your backstory with our readers?
In considering my story, there are several pivotal pieces that have contributed to the greater picture. Recognizing at a very early age, my relentless pursuit of seeking knowledge, propensity for asking thought-provoking questions, and meticulous attention to the actions and self-expression of others are attributes that still show up today, both personally and professionally. Evolving in my ability to effectively communicate what I’d discovered, express my curiosities, and share what I’d experienced, based on my observations, are areas that I continued to explore during early adolescence.
Upon entering college, having considered myself relatively proficient in analytical skills, interpreting information, and creative writing, I intended to apply what I’d gained to declare a major in journalism and public relations. However, an unexpected encounter during undergrad, which sparked a conversation while at the bus stop on Florida State University’s campus, piqued my interest in Communication Sciences and Disorders. A conversation and the series of events that would follow resulted in my career as a Speech-Language Pathologist. Over ten years later, I’ve had the opportunity to gain experience in many different medical and educational settings, working with people of diverse cultural and linguistic backgrounds at every stage of life. Through my desire to bridge my early beginnings and personal interests, namely in education, advocacy, and inclusion, with my professional endeavors, I was able to pivot in 2020 by continuing to grow my private practice while establishing a publishing company. In one year, I was able to release five publications and serve as contributing author for another.
I’m sure you wouldn’t say it’s been obstacle free, but so far would you say the journey have been a fairly smooth road?
Secondary to my determination and diligence in following through with what I’d set out to accomplish, I did not perceive any unmanageable barriers or obstacles. When embarking on a new venture, I intend to establish clear goals and complete the necessary steps, including managing time and resources to successfully meet my intended outcomes. The ease of how it is accomplished is generally relative to my mindset towards it and how I choose to communicate about it. Navigating each field of study and chosen industry certainly came with its own set of considerations, especially when managing a growing caseload, meeting the specific needs of a particular contract, learning marketing approaches, and applying methods to scale up as an entrepreneur is no small feat. I’ve been fortunate to have the support of my husband and a core set of individuals that are genuinely invested in my success at every stage. The ever-evolving mastery of work-life balance is as much humbling as it is rewarding.
Can you tell our readers more about what you do and what you think sets you apart from others?
We help people communicate. I help clients use the power of effective communication to achieve better outcomes, both personally and professionally, by equipping them with the tools to elevate their confidence, broaden their influence and increase their impact. Through the work done by my private practice, we’ve had clients present their performance pieces and have their voices featured at venues such as the High Museum of Art; we’ve also had clients gain the confidence to voice their stories and be featured alongside globetrotting artists. Our client base has included administrators who serve in the capacity of local government bodies overseeing educational institutions, while our program development and specialized training have served to increase awareness and reduce barriers to ensure that all communicators can express themselves in a functional and meaningful way. Empowering clients toward self-advocacy, whether they’re on the main stage for an event such as the Atlanta Jazz Festival, for example, or speaking up for the first time among a group of peers, is what we do well.
From the classroom to the corporate boardroom, we pride ourselves on meeting a wide range of specific needs for the clients that we serve. Regarding other professional endeavors, I am grateful for the opportunity to position my publishing company creatively and innovatively to contribute to the marketplace through books and related products and services, particularly in the area of education, self-help, and inspiration. Having authored several books and provided consultancy for other aspiring authors, I’ve had the honor of sharing my knowledge and experiences through speaking engagements, workshops, and courses. During the process of producing publications, I’ve launched a podcast focused on communication, storytelling, and relationships. Guests featured on the podcast are able to communicate about their lived experiences and how the ways in which they show up in conversation have impacted their relationships. One pillar of the platform speaks to the notion that communication is the cornerstone of strong relationships. We aim to have that represented authentically, across content, and through the stories shared.
If you had to, what characteristic of yours would you give the most credit to?
Characteristics that I believe have been most important to my success include being a leader who exercises a high degree of emotional intelligence, genuine passion for my current creative endeavors, careful attention to the needs of my clients, as well as faith that is based on relationship rather than religion. Using the power of effective communication and applying principles from The Word Equity® Model has been largely instrumental in my success.
