Today we’d like to introduce you to DoMo JOAT.
DoMo, we appreciate you taking the time to share your story with us today. Where does your story begin?
I began my life as a performer at the age of five when I joined my aunt‘s dance school “The Dance Workshop”. This is where I learned Swing, Lindy Hop, Jitterbug, Tap, Ballet, African, Ballroom & hip-hop. My journey through dance took me performing at the Cotton Club, Lincoln Center, Carnegie Hall and various other places before the age of 13. I was introduced into music at the age of 11 in Junior High School Meyer Levin IS 285. For my talent class, I was given the options of Dance, Band or Steel Pan. I decided to choose Steel Pan and over 2 decades later, DoMo has taught Steel Band ensembles in over 20 NYC schools, performed in many big venues, places and events in the country and internationally. Steel Pan is my first instrument but also plays piano and drums. In Brooklyn, NY he played withCASYM Steel Orchestra. In Trinidad, he played with Invaders, Skiffle Bunch, Serenaders & Power Stars. I started utilizing my vocals and lyrical talent after graduating High School going into College. This is the moment in my life where I started to take his music a bit more serious and start recording with his childhood friend and now producer/engineer Matthew Cherrington. We collaborated on an album in October 2013 titled “EarthStrong” that is streaming on all streaming platforms and recorded other music as well. Now I’m Working with producer Lennox Glen on an EP that will be dropping on all platforms soon.
I’m also a certified naturopath, specializing in holistic health and nutritional science for over six years. I give health lectures and workshops has one-on-one consultations, and create herbal cleanses for each of the human body systems. This part of my business was a catalyst to me being in Atlanta. My wife Botanica and I have a business called “Balanced Healing”. They offer Sound Healing Yoga Classes where I, the masculine side, provide the sound therapy with the beautiful vibrations of the steel pan, while Botanica, the feminine side of the duo gently guides the participant to choose an intention, reflect, release and affirm. During the last pose, savasana, individuals lie down and experience the tones while they integrate their yogic experience
Alright, so let’s dig a little deeper into the story – has it been an easy path overall and if not, what were the challenges you’ve had to overcome?
It’s never smooth. It’s always some challenges and struggles on the way. Being the Jack of All trades I have many talents and many different focuses so a big challenge is focusing on one and either being overwhelmed because of having to many things to focus on. I have 2 beautiful sons. My second son is 11 months now and my first son that’s now 14, I was 15 when I had him so growing up at 15 and being a parent was definitely a struggle. But no complaints and no regrets.

Alright, so let’s switch gears a bit and talk business. What should we know about your work?
I’m a professional musician, performing artist, and songwriter. I instrument I specialize in is the steel pan. I’m also a vocalist and dancer. I’m known for being the Jack of All Trades and having so many talents that I’m actually great in. I’m most proud of my children and family.
What sets me apart is that facts that I’m a Jack of All Trades and master of my trades instead of being a master of none.
What do you like best about our city? What do you like least?
I love Atlanta, it’s the Black Mecca in the Country. Everyone that knows me, I’m all about Black excellence & supporting Black businesses. The home of the New Black Wall Street Shopping Mall. I love being there and seeing my people and the experiencing the southern hospitality and the great great Vegan Food especially in the West End.
