Today we’d like to introduce you to Dr. Maxine Owusu.
Hi Dr. Owusu, so excited to have you with us today. What can you tell us about your story?
Shea Seasons first started as a solution to help my daughter’s eczema at the age of four months. I created body butters infused with healing oils to help combat skin irritation, dry skin, burns/ scars to name a few. Over time this brand expanded to include therapeutic bath products, accessories & lounge apparel focusing on self-care/relaxation with an emphasis and appreciation of my Ghanaian culture. Shea Seasons has now become a lifestyle brand giving homage to the motherland with our authentic products and celebration of African prints /designs.
Can you talk to us a bit about the challenges and lessons you’ve learned along the way. Looking back would you say it’s been easy or smooth in retrospect?
It has been a learning experience in the last ten months to say the least in a pandemic! Learning how to navigate securing vendors, booking brand photos, starting a website, controlling a social media page and then some all while having a full-time job and a family can be challenging but nothing worth having comes easy. I am grateful for the support and help of my husband through this journey. This has been a joint effort as we continue to grow.
Can you tell our readers more about what you do and what you think sets you apart from others?
I am an Emergency Medicine Doctor and love what I do. I see various patients from different backgrounds seeking acute management of their illness. I always wanted to be a doctor at the age of eight and it has been a privilege to serve others. I am most proud of my dedication and persistence in life. Most people would say I am levelheaded and laid back. In the midst of chaos in the ED, I have been told that I keep the team calm and unify the members to work effectively together.
Do you have any advice for those just starting out?
My advice is to start! Don’t wait for things to be perfect. Write down your plan to include your short-term/long-term goals. There is so much information online so be diligent and research your industry. One thing I wish I knew starting out was better marketing strategies. I am now learning more when it comes to marketing and using platforms like social media to my advantage.
