Check Out Dr. Michelle Robinson’s Story

Today we’d like to introduce you to Dr. Michelle Robinson.

Dr. Michelle Robinson

Hi Dr. Robinson, so excited to have you with us today. What can you tell us about your story?
In 2020, I suddenly lost my father and as you can imagine the grief was unbearable. One day, I was sitting and finally reading through all of the greeting cards I had received while also having a conversation with my mom about how I can channel the grief. We both jokingly said I could start my own greeting card line to help others express their feelings, but a unique greeting card line that gave my community products that represent us, speak like us and use our unique expressions in the form of greeting cards and other customized products. When you enter the greeting card section at most retailers, the quantity and quality of African-American greeting cards leave much to be desired. I love receiving and giving greeting cards but always struggled with the lack of diversity in the greeting cards I would see. So, immediately I started brainstorming on a name, on the types of greeting cards I wanted to create, what equipment I needed, etc. I am excited that I followed through and made my vision a reality, and I haven’t looked back since. I am proud to say that Melanin Emotions by Chelle Nichole still keeps a smile on my face, it has helped me tremendously on this grief journey, and through client testimonials, I am confident that my products are well received, needed, and loved throughout the African-American community.

Alright, so let’s dig a little deeper into the story – has it been an easy path overall and if not, what were the challenges you’ve had to overcome?
For the most part, it has been a smooth road. Entrepreneurship is not an easy road, but a road worth traveling. Unfortunately, one of the biggest struggles is that you lose financially before you really see a break-even or significant financial growth. Additionally, it can be challenging to juggle a full-time job, family, and being a small business owner. If you are going to start a business, you must have the time to commit to it. In reality, I am the business, I am the CEO, I am the creative designer, I manage the logistics and operations, I make the products and I market and sell the products. While this can be difficult to do sometimes, you have to keep pushing through to reach your desired goals. I choose to push through! I want to see Melanin Emotions by Chelle Nichole in retailers all over the world one day and most importantly I want my products to be sought out to put a smile on someone’s face or an encouraging word in their heart.

Thanks – so what else should our readers know about your work and what you’re currently focused on?
Professionally, I work in the field of Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion. I am committed in my professional life to create opportunities for all individuals to be treated fairly and for work environments to be equitable and diverse. It’s funny as I type this; I immediately began reflecting on how my small business and my career align. They both signify the importance of equity and diversity. Additionally, in my doctoral research, I focused on these three tenants as well. It’s truly a blessing that my career and passions align. I am proud that I am creating a sense of belonging for the African-American community. I am proud that God is using me as a vessel to highlight the importance of diversity.

What was your favorite childhood memory?
I loved the summers as a child. The memories of waking up early Saturday morning and being able to play with the kids on my block from sunup to sundown bring joy to me. I am grateful that my childhood included those moments of playful banter and lots of laughter.
