Would you say it’s been a smooth road, and if not what are some of the biggest challenges you’ve faced along the way?
I’ve referenced my personal struggles in my previous story. As a small business, I think 3 of the biggest barriers for many of us has been 1. the initial startup cost. It takes a huge leap of faith to sacrifice your personal finances into a vision that may or may not return an immediate profit. 2. Another challenge would be that many of us are first generation entrepreneurs, without mentors, learning about finances, how to keep documentation and records, how to properly file taxes and draft a formal business plan for potential investors. 3. Branding and finding your market /niche to get a return on your investment.
Alright, so let’s switch gears a bit and talk business. What should we know about your work?
I would consider myself a professional employee and business owner. My career has been primarily public service work in marginalized communities for nearly 3 decades. I’m known for being passionate about the work that I do, while serving in communities, and being organized with administrative work.
I’m most proud of my children, all three are high school and college graduates, working and providing for themselves and their household with the bonus of living to see my legacy extended the birth of my now two-year-old first granddaughter and my first grandson due in November.
When I talk about my three children (now young adults), and their accomplishments, that seems to set me apart from others. Unfortunately, they’re still a lot of societal stigmas we are overcoming with regard to our expectations of success vs. normal expectations.
Do you have any advice for those looking to network or find a mentor?
I encourage others to have more than one mentor for different seasons and genres of your life. I’m a frequent participant in networking and conference events. I love to meet new people, read and travel. I believe it expands our perspectives and appreciate differences. We learn more when we are open minded and explore new things.
