Today we’d like to introduce you to Erica Scales.
Hi Erica, we’d love for you to start by introducing yourself.
I’ve gained so much knowledge while attending college in film and briefly in journalism on how to write news stories and conduct interviews, so I decided to build a small media company which consists of interviews, podcasts, local news, and shows. The entertainment business is still a male-dominated business and that’s definitely a challenge for me as a woman. I’ve found love in wanting to do this because I grew up sheltered and shy and needed to branch out. Creating something like this on my own allows me to go out be open and be myself. Consistency is the key to getting results and it’s also the key to success.
Can you talk to us a bit about the challenges and lessons you’ve learned along the way. Looking back would you say it’s been easy or smooth in retrospect?
This was not an easy journey and it’s definitely not easy now. One thing about it is that you have to make a plan about what about you want to do and create. I chose this path because I’m passionate about being a creative. It all started when I attended film school when I lived in Charlotte, NC in 2014. I conducted my first practice interview for a assignment for class. I had fun asking lots of questions to the interviewee. I’ve been interested ever since.
Appreciate you sharing that. What else should we know about what you do?
I’m mainly focusing on building my small media company called “Culture Factor Media.” We specialize in news, interviews, podcasts and show type of content. We established a show called “Culture Factor Exclusives” and we interviewed musical rap artists named Montez Wilson and Young Dirt. We also will be conducting street interviews and answering questions about life such as relationships, self-awareness, life skills, and work life. We are looking forward to interviewing more artists and business owners. What sets us apart from others is that it’s a media company owned by a Black woman. Women like Kathy Hughes and Oprah Winfrey had opened up those doors already. Having clear-cut goals is really important because I want my projects to go in the right direction. Your work might be good without goals, but it will lack direction and forward growth.
In terms of your work and the industry, what are some of the changes you are expecting to see over the next five to ten years?
Expect us to continue to help our community the best way we can. We will be pitching new ideas, producing more news content, interviews and working with established and up-and-coming business owners, celebrity/local artists. I will continue on identifying and strengthening my weaknesses so I can improve in significant ways, allowing me to progress at work.
