Today we’d like to introduce you to Erjia Guan.
Alright, so thank you so much for sharing your story and insight with our readers. To kick things off, can you tell us a bit about how you got started?
I showed an interest in drawing when I was a child. Fortunately, my parents encouraged me to take up this passion. They sent me to an art school, where I was introduced to different art forms, such as sculpture and photography. In the beginning, I mainly did traditional drawings. Once I learned about digital drawing, I tended to work with it more because it was more convenient.
Alright, so let’s dig a little deeper into the story – has it been an easy path overall and if not, what were the challenges you’ve had to overcome?
Art has always been a journey of self-doubt for me. At the beginning of my studies, drawing was judged by whether you drew the anatomy correctly or not. But later on, I found that as an illustrator, it is not the case that how realistic you draw makes good work. Occasionally I need to leave my style and aesthetic of drawing behind to conform to the art market. These made me doubt myself from time to time.
Can you tell our readers more about what you do and what you think sets you apart from others?
I am known for my flat illustration style. Red, blue and black are my favorite colors, and the contrast of these colors makes a strong visual impact. I like to pass the mood and energy of these colors through my works. That makes a major component of my picture.
We all have a different way of looking at and defining success. How do you define success?
Success for me is being able to draw what I want to draw and being recognized by the public.
