Today we’d like to introduce you to Eson Atkinson.
Hi Eson, thanks for joining us today. We’d love for you to start by introducing yourself.
I officially started Daughters of Paint in 2021 at the age of 22. My experience with house painting goes as far back as playing in a playpen on job sites – while my mom painted her way through college for a property owner. At the age of 13, the same woman that taught my mom.. taught me. I spent the summers of my youth doing rental turnovers for that proprietor. After years of service industry work, retail, and a couple of failed attempts at college – I started painting at random to make ends meet. In 2020 as odd jobs turned into full-time painting alone, I then got a job working for a small crew which taught me tricks of the trade and the basics of the industry. I soon left that and went off on my own, hiring and training friends to help with larger projects. And here we are. Now, I work alongside Casey Dunken and together, we run an all-woman crew that specializes in historic homes, sign painting, and hand-painted accents for businesses and homeowners all around Georgia.
Alright, so let’s dig a little deeper into the story – has it been an easy path overall and if not, what were the challenges you’ve had to overcome?
Yes.. and no. The growth of the business has been one foot in front of the other, accepting opportunities that align with us and learning along the way. In the grand scheme – this has been a natural evolution. Day to day – it can feel both inspiring and defeating. We are natural risk-takers – and we usually have to figure out how the hell we’re going to pull off our latest endeavor. This could mean learning new techniques, sourcing new equipment, travel, and negative bank accounts. There are constant learning curves, redirections, trials, and errors. Creatively and professionally. It is never easy when developing your own career – but every experience brings us closer to mastering our craft.
Can you tell our readers more about what you do and what you think sets you apart from others?
We are a very different kind of crew, and that is what we are most proud of. Exploring new ideas with clients and breathing life into something worn and well-loved is where we thrive and gain fulfillment. We specialize in historic house painting, sign painting, and hand-painted accents for clients all around Georgia. We have developed a name for ourselves in the restorative community because of the extensive attention and love we give to our projects. Casey and I have cultivated an inspiring work environment which allows young women to work together as collaborators, friends, and artists. We value mental health, freedom, acceptance, love, dignity, and self-expression. We sweat out our inner turmoils and have fun along the way.
How do you define success?
While there is the ability to grow exponentially from here – we feel that we have already succeeded. We pay our bills doing something we love and have created a life that is creative and free.
