Today we’d like to introduce you to Eva Jane Bunkley.
Hi Eva, please kick things off for us with an introduction to yourself and your story.
Born in L.A… Raised in Columbus, Ohio…
Transplant GA Peach!
I moved to Atlanta in 1993 to pursue a career as a fashion stylist and inadvertently became a professional makeup artist instead! A few years into my career, I got the production bug and made my first documentary feature film, “My Mother Was a Butterfly,” which won 1st place at the Kingdomwood Christian Film Festival in 2008. In 2013, I introduced my first patented product, “The Makeup Bullet® – HiDef Cosmetic Finger Sponge,” to the market. It has sold all over the world!
I’m sure it wasn’t obstacle-free, but would you say the journey has been fairly smooth so far?
I basically began a new career endeavor each decade of my adult life, and what is most challenging is managing the overlap. At this time, I am in the last leg of my makeup artistry career, as it has spanned over 30 years, and as a creative, I desire to explore other endeavors. I still enjoy production, and my production company, Eva-Lution Studios, which I began in my 30s, is active in producing for clients, and I am in the process of creating a follow-up to my 1st film, “…Butterfly.”
I recently expanded the beauty brand that I began in my 40’s; “The Makeup Bullet®,” to include color cosmetics with the release of “The Makeup Bullet® – Lip Paint.” My hope is for the brand to become acquired or licensed.
Thanks – so, what else should our readers know about your work and what you’re currently focused on?
As a creative, I feel that that monicker in itself sets me apart, as no two artists are alike! I can claim the titles of makeup artist, filmmaker, director, producer, writer, editor, author (my book is called “Innovative Beauty – Keys to an Inventor’s Success”), an inventor and patent holder, and an entrepreneur. That is just my professional life. It can be overwhelming at times as I wear ALL of the hats. My personal life – my family – my children and husband are what bring me the most joy, grounding, and peace with the uncertainty of all of my professional endeavors. The support and love they give are my energy and motivation to keep going. I don’t know if “balance” is possible because of all of the ebbs and flows of life, but when I am at the edge of my wits with an intense project or deadline, having their love and support keeps me from stressing out!
Is there any advice you’d like to share with our readers who might just be starting out?
I do believe when I began my career in the 90s was a different time. I wouldn’t do this generation service to say it’s easier now to launch, maintain, and get exposure for a brand because of the digital landscape because everything is relative. My 1st apartment in Midtown Atlanta was $350 per month rent in 1993! I had more grace as a person out on my own for the first time in a new city.
That said, there are so many routes to being able to sustain and take care of yourself than when I was younger. I won’t say that makes it any easier, though. My biggest advice is to have a solid support system, whether it’s family, friends, or people of like mind who have similar interests and don’t fall into the trap of comparing your progress with anyone else’s.
