Native Atlantan, Fenell “Nell D” Darlene, is a multifaceted creative force. Grew up in Decatur,Georgia raised by Liberian parents and the oldest of three children. Nell’s artistic journey began in elementary school with spoken word and performing arts. At 15, she expanded her talents to journalism, writing for VOX Newspaper in Atlanta.

Education & Early Career

Nell D graduated from Cedar Grove High School (2009) and earned her Bachelor’s degree in Mass Communications (Cum Laude, 2013) from Bethune-Cookman University. While attending college, she worked for the school’s radio and TV stations, launching her first podcast, OpenMicTV.

Her nonprofit, Creative Arts Trade School (CATS), empowers the next generation of creative artists. If you as Nell she’s not a poet, she’s a “shit-talker,” because she knows how to switch from poet to rapper on the mic. Her song, “Picture Me,” has her supporters surprised but shocked with her lyrical appeal but very elevating.

I’m sure it wasn’t obstacle-free, but would you say the journey has been fairly smooth so far?
It’s tough being a creative because it’s about ambition and never letting nothing stop my journey.

As you know, we’re big fans of you and your work. For our readers who might not be as familiar what can you tell them about what you do?
I specialize in journalism and film. I’m known for my poetry and interviews with some amazing individuals and most importantly my loving personality. What sets me apart is that I’m sure of myself and no matter how long it takes I will live the life my heart desires. After I got my Masters I was proud to get an opportunity with Ballys sports as a Live Operator because I promised myself that I would never move backwards and I will always put myself in a position to put my degrees to use.

Any advice for finding a mentor or networking in general?
Always thank your past for your present and the future coming your way. Most important thing is to always believe in yourself.
