Check Out Good Enough’s Story

Today we’d like to introduce you to Good Enough.

Good Enough

Alright, so thank you so much for sharing your story and insight with our readers. To kick things off, can you tell us a bit about how you got started?
The two of us originally met through a mutual friend and realized we both had a passion for music and songwriting. As we continued to work together, we quickly formed the band, “Good Enough” in the spring of 2021. Through workshopping back and forth, we found a songwriting process that worked well for us, highlighting each of our individual strengths. While Marcus works on crafting the structure, instrumentation, and production of each track, Ash focuses on building a story through her personal and heartfelt lyrics. We used this process to release our first single in November 2022, “Started” – a song that encompasses the change that comes with growing older. It is about the overwhelming feeling of wanting to navigate life independently, but realizing it can be more difficult than that. Soon after our first single, we released two more songs: crash and 2:54.

Later in April of 2022, we released our latest single, “stranger”, a song about the innermost thoughts that come with not wanting to lose a relationship. “stranger” was a catalyst that has carried us to where we are today. Through the past few months, we have been put on playlists, had the opportunity to open for bands, had an article written, had multiple interviews and meetings, and built a fanbase within our community. As of late, we are looking at playing more shows, putting more music out, and continuing to spread our message that “You are good enough”.

We all face challenges, but looking back would you describe it as a relatively smooth road?
Starting out from scratch in the music industry can honestly be very challenging. We have had to spend time learning and researching ways to be successful in every aspect of the process – the business, the songwriting, the production, performing live, etc. In addition, it can be a struggle to be creative. We both have experienced writer’s block on numerous occasions, which can be frustrating and cause self-doubt. Through that however, we both encourage each other and play off one another to get unblocked. Another struggle we have faced is getting our name out there. It can be discouraging to work incredibly hard on a project and have it not received the way you had dreamed. But, we think it is important not to give up and keep striving for opportunities to arise in the future.

Alright, so let’s switch gears a bit and talk business. What should we know about your work?
Marcus: I mainly focus on making our instrumentals and production. I’ll stay up until 4 AM trying to make anything that sounds remotely good and then I’ll send it to Ash to see if she wants to do anything with it. I perform most, if not, all of the instruments you hear on our songs – from the guitar to the bass to the synths heard. Also, I mix and master our tracks, a large part of the unique sound we bring to the industry. The thing that I am most proud of was putting on our first show. Being able to create our show and set from the ground up and to then perform it is a feeling like no other. What takes it to the next level is being able to see people, in real-time, enjoy and connect with the song that we have created.

Ash: I will usually wake up to a text from Marcus at 4 AM with the greatest track I’ve ever heard in my life. If I’m having a good day, I will usually respond in a few hours with a melody I like accompanied with a few lyrics from my notes app. Some days it is the hardest thing for me to be the “voice of Good Enough”, mainly because I grew up with extreme stage fright and honestly still hate my voice sometimes. Marcus has been a huge reason I have gained confidence and felt comfortable enough to perform live in front of people (an actual dream come true). I think our unique sound in the indie scene sets us apart from others. I’m pretty proud of the lyrics that I write, and I can tell we’re only getting better from here.

How do you think about luck?
Luck, in our opinion, is just as important as having skill in this industry. We have been very lucky in the opportunities that we have been able to receive and accept. We were extremely lucky to receive an invite to open for a band coming through Atlanta, which gave us our first show. Hopefully, our luck continues.
