Today we’d like to introduce you to Gwynnis Mosby.
Hi Gwynnis, can you start by introducing yourself? We’d love to learn more about how you got to where you are today?
I am a 38 year veteran makeup artist. I am from Atlanta, my career began here. I went to Arnold’s School of Cosmetology. I graduated from the Aesthetics program. I started out in the fashion industry and the models that I worked with started appearing in music videos.. I got to be apart of the growing music scene in Atlanta. LaFace, SoSo Def and Rowdy Records would hire me to do makeup for their artists. I was also hired by the Bronner Brothers to be the lead makeup artist for their fashion shows and the King Family to be the lead makeup artist for their Celebration programs for Dr. Martin Luther King Jr.
Alright, so let’s dig a little deeper into the story – has it been an easy path overall and if not, what were the challenges you’ve had to overcome?
I am a free lance artist and sometimes it’s a struggle to collect your monies. You have to always present yourself in a very professional way because the competition can get to be a little strong but you have to continually work on your craft to get better and better. Always stay professional, be on time and keep your makeup kit clean and organized.. Being a makeup artist with good sanitation skills will always set you apart.
Can you tell our readers more about what you do and what you think sets you apart from others?
I am a celebrity makeup artist, I have had the privilege of working with Toni Braxton, Faith Evans, TLC, SWV, Monica, Karen White, Pebbles, Cherelle, Mikki Howard, Jill Scott, Kut Klose, Xscape, Kris Kross, Goodie Mob, OutKast, Tupac, Bill Cosby, Stevie Wonder , Keith Sweat, Da Brat and many more. I have started a school, The Gwynnis Mosby Makeup Artist Training Center and I do a Trade Show specifically for makeup artist.
Do you have any advice for those just starting out?
My advice to new makeup artist is to develop a great work ethic, keep your kit cleaned and organized, always be on time, always have a pleasant disposition. Sometimes people are willing to work with someone with a positive attitude that’s not as experienced than someone with a bad attitude that’s experienced. I always tell my makeup artist that we do what we have to do until we can do what we want to do!
